Surnames: Kelly
Edward Kelly was born in Kildare and was, I think, the younger brother of Thomas Kildare, the Sovereign of Kildare. He was a Captain in the 12th Dragoons and was also the father of Lt. Col. Edward Kelly who was known as Waterloo Kelly. I am trying to find out who Edward Kelly' wife was, who his father was and if in fact Thomas Kelly was his brother.

1798 Claims and Compensation:

Thomas Kelly, Esquire Maddenstown, Kildare
Claim for houses burned 476 Pounds 17 shilling and 1 pence
No paid amount shown
(That is a lot of money in those days, the houses may have been on his estate, his own home 'big house' maybe included which would indicate a estate house. www.landedestates.ie)

1824 Directory has the following: www.failteromhat.com
Description of Kildare as a town 25 mi. s.w. of Dublin 10 mi.from Naas, 5 from Monastereven. His Majesty George the 4th visited the races there in 1821.

Under the heading of Gentry & Clergy:

Captn. Kelly, Kildare, Kildare

Lewis Kelly, Esq. Kildare, Kildare

Edward T. Kelly M.D. Maynooth 12 mi. w of Dublin 9 from Naas

1846:

Edward Fitzgerald O'Kelly, Surgeon and apothecary Kilcock and Maynooth

Bernard Kelly, apothecary listed under Professional persons

There are other Kelly' of course in any number of professions.

In Griffith Valuation of 1852 there are 625 Kelly's. I looked at the Thomas's did not find many with IN FEE - owned their own land and those that did was very little.
Same with Edward, many of both leasing from the Marquis of
Kildare. Note - look for towns mentioned eg: Maddenstown,
Monastereven as possibilities for the name Kelly.
www.askaboutireland.ie You would be looking for a Kelly with a lot of tenants.

Captns. were often given places on boards of Poor Law Unions, were magistrates or Justice of the Peace.

Thomas Robert Kelly, Gentleman Monasterven, Kildare
9 March 1814 'indented release'.(this is the year of the death of your Edward.

An indenture could be on property. I have seen an indenture from 1929 for Wexford with a list of all those living on the estate, which included the Town of
Enniscorthy and surrounds - hundreds of rental properties. Part of the requiement of getting ready for a sale of the Estate to show prospective buyers.

Thanks James.

How did you know Thomas' second name was Edward? Edward Kelly b. 1742 was the second son of Thomas. His first son Robert died as the result of a dual in India. Edward Kelly died in either Ireland or England; it was his son Edward Kelly 1771-1828 who died in India.

Thomas Edward Kelly in my greatX5 grandfather. I have tried to find out who Thomas' parents were without any success. The Kellys originally come from Roscommon.

Cheers,

I believe this man is my Gt Gt Gt Gt Uncle.
Commissioned on 8th May 1764 in 12th Light Dragoons so that makes a birth date of 1742 about right.
I did not know about Robert.
I do not know where Edward died.
I did not know Edward Kelly 1771-1828 died in India,
and I cannot really place him.
