Hi,

I'm looking for some help in tracking down my husband's great Grandfather Robert Crawford. We believe he was born circa 1840's. His father's name was also Robert.

He enrolled in the East Indian Army in 1956, in Dublin. We know from there he travelled to Bombay, India where he married a Mary Parker in 1867. When he was discharged from the army, he emigrated to Tasmania in 1875.

I would be grateful for any information as to his parents, and whether or not he was born in Kildare.

Thanks so much!

Hi - no relation, but according to Griffiths Valuation http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?a..., there is no Robert Crawford in Kildare c. 1853, although there are other Crawfords listed.

According to a ROBERT CRAWFORD/Wilde family tree on ancestry.com belonging to Rebecca Wilde in Australia, Robert was born in Lanarkshire, Scotland on 11 May 1840, parents Robert and Janet, spouse Mary Parker. Robert jnr died in Hobart, Tasmania on 31 Dec 1918, aged 75. Is this your Robert?

Hi,

Thanks for the reply! Yes it is the same Robert, but I am unsure if he really was born in Scotland. I have Robert's military records, which show him being from Kilcullen, Kildare, and enrolling in the Dublin Military in 1855, thereafter moving to the East Indian Company in 1856 and finally to the Royal Artillery in 1860 (I think). The links for the Scottish Robert Crawford show him in Scotland in the 1860's, long after he was in India.

I also searched the Valuation for Dublin, thinking perhaps he might be there, but no luck. If he was in the military, would he not appear in Griffiths? Any other suggestions as to where i should look?

Kind regards,

As Robert jnr was born c. 1840, he would have been too young to have had/rented land, therefore he wouldn't be listed in Griffiths. If his father was residing in Ireland, he should have been listed, unless he too was in the military?
I had a quick look on the IFHF site for a Robert Crawford born to a Robert Crawford in Kildare, but no records came up.
Do you happen to know Robert jnr's mother's name? Perhaps you could search for his parent's marriage, which would at least establish a place. Or do you know of any siblings of Robert's?
Sorry can't be of any further help.
Regards

I have been researching the Crawford family of Evandale and Hobart, Tasmania, for quite a while. I have a lot of information about Robert Crawford and Mary Parker and their children and would be happy to share.

After emigrating to Tasmania Robert and Mary Crawford had another 7 children, with a total of 13. My husband's great grandmother was Mary Elizabeth Crawford.

I hope this is of interest to you

Hi Cathy,

That is very kind offer, thank you. I know who your ancestor is, I have found her fascinating! My husband's grandfather was William Henry Crawford, her younger brother.

I have been fortunate enough to work with another member of the clan, and we would love to share!

Let me know how best to reach you.

Kind regards,

Lisa
