LARKIN, Thomas b. 1868 in Boston, Kildare

Hello,

I have little experience with Irish family history research. I inevitably hit a brick wall with Irish research but I thought I should push my experience a little.

My 2 x great grandfather, Thomas Larkin was born in 2/3 Jul 1868 in Boston, Kildare. According to the Church Baptism Records, he was baptised 19 Jul 1868. His mother and father were named Mary Larkin (nee Callaghan [or variation]) and Charles Larkin. He immigrated to Australia in 1891. Several of his siblings, Charles Gregory Aloysius Larkin (b. 1864), John Larkin (b. 1866) and Mary Larkin (b. 1881) also immigrated to Australia.

I have the records of his travel to Australia and record of his birth from the Quarterly returns of births in Ireland, 1864-1955, with index to births, 1864-1921 (Microfilm 0101172 Page 513) but was wondering what other information I could find in Irish records?

Any suggestions or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, Rootsweb reformatted this message into one long string that I cannot edit.

Welcome to "Irish" genealogy!

I have given you some links below that may help you. What I have found is that there were no Larkins or Callaghans in Boston in 1851 (the year of Griffith's Valuation), so they must have moved there sometime later. The following links may tell you where they came from. See if any names look familiar to you. Irish repeated names in families.

Here is a link that will give you more information about the location of Boston in Kildare:
http://www.seanruad.com/cgi-bin/iresrch

Griffith's Valuation lists 18 Larkins (leaseholders) in Kildare in 1851 (this should lead to relations of your 2x great grandfather):
http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?a...=

The two names in the above that are not Larkin indicate that they leased from someone named Larkin. Look at the details for more information.

The following link will give you all of the names of leaseholders in the civil parish of Oughterard, including Boston. This may lead to more family connections.
http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/kildare/oughterard.htm

The following link will show the inhabitants of Boston in 1851: http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?a...=

You can check the 1901 census at: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/
This may tell you any family members who stayed in Ireland.

Griffith's Valuation is the only census substitute for the 1800s. There are fragments that exist, but none for Kildare that I know about. Other places you may check are:

Hello SRuss17,

I’m not a descendant of the Larkin or Callaghan families, nor have I been researching Thomas Larkin and his family in the past, but I found information about Thomas and his family, some of which you no doubt already have, but some which you may not.

For example, I located the marriage index for Thomas’s parents, Charles Larkin and Mary Callaghan at the Irish Family History Foundation (IFHF) website for County Kildare. The index shows that Charles and Mary were married in the Kildare Catholic Church in 1861.

The marriage index follows:

1 match for the search criteria: Larkin (plus variants) Charles 1861 Parish: KILDARE (RC)

Record Type: Marriage Records for Co. Kildare
Surname: Larkin
First Name: Charles
Spouse's Surname: Callaghan
Spouse's First Name: Mary
Father's Surname:
Father's First Name:
Mother's Surname:
Mother's First Name:

Year: 1861

Parish/District: Parish: KILDARE (RC)
____

The IFHF homepage can be found at: http://www.rootsireland.ie/

Before accessing indexes at the IFHF you’ll first have to register. Registration is free. You’ll also be able to access the marriage index for Charles and Mary that I did for free, but you will be charged to obtain a transcription of the marriage from the IFHF. You’ll have to purchase credits with a credit card to obtain the transcriptions. The IFHF website will have more information about purchasing credits for baptism, as well as birth, marriage, and death or burial transcriptions.

The marriage transcription may give you additional information not found in the index, such as the exact date of the marriage, and may also include the name or names of the witnesses to the marriage, and the name of the priest who married Charles and Mary.

I then uncovered the baptism indexes for 10 children of Charles Larkin and Mary Callaghan at the IFHF for County Kildare.

These children and their years of baptism are: Bridget (1862); Charles (1864); John (1866); Thomas (1868); Mary (1871); Teresa (1872); James (1875); Rosann (1877); Catherine (1879); and Winifred (1881).

The indexes show that all the children except for Winifred were baptized in the Kildare Catholic Church. The index for Winifred shows her baptism took place in the Rathangan Catholic Church, County Kildare.

The indexes follow:

You can order the baptism transcriptions for the Larkin children individually, or you can order them from one index. To order from one index, see the search criteria below. Do not include the first names of the children. In place of first names, use the % sign as a wild card. Also do not include the children’s years of baptism, or the Parish/District where the baptisms took place.

Next I found the civil birth indexes for five children of Charles Larkin and Mary Callaghan. I believe you already have the civil birth record for Thomas, but I’ve included the birth index for him below in any event.

By way of explanation, Civil Registration began in Ireland in 1845 when the government began recording Protestant marriages only, not because of any prejudice against Catholics, but because the Catholic Church requested that their parishioners not be a part of the Civil Registration process when it came to recording marriages.

Civil Registration of births, marriages, and deaths for all religious denominations commenced in Ireland in 1864.

The birth indexes below are from the Latter Day Saints (LDS) website at:
https://www.familysearch.org/#form=advanced-records

These indexes are for Charles, John, Thomas, Teresa, and James. The indexes for Charles, John, and Thomas, show the births were recorded in Rathangan, Kildare. The indexes for Teresa and James do not include the district where their births were recorded.

Each index is accompanied by a Source Film Number. These film numbers refer to microfilms on which copies of the original birth records can be found. The birth records for each Larkin child will be on different films. These microfilms can be ordered from your local Family History Center.

The indexes follow:

Once again, your Family History Center will be able to answer any questions you may have about accessing indexes online and ordering microfilms.

Alternatively you can also order copies of the birth records for any of the Larkin children born after 1863 from the General Register Office (GRO) in Roscommon Town, County Roscommon. As noted earlier, Civil Registration of births, marriages, and deaths for all religious denominations began in Ireland in 1864.

For information about ordering civil birth, marriage, and death records, application forms, and cost of records, go to the GRO website at: www.groireland.ie/

Next I wanted to see if I could find any Larkins and Callaghans living in Bostoncommon in an Irish property tax record known as Griffiths Valuation.

Griffiths Valuation was enumerated in the 32 counties of Ireland between 1847 and 1864. The valuation for Bostoncommon, Civil Parish of Cloncurry, was completed by the year 1853, though I believe the valuation for County Kildare began in 1851.

Unlike a census, Griffiths Valuation did not enumerate family members. Those named in the valuation were the people who leased property. Each person who paid to lease the property was called an “Occupier.” The other person listed in Griffiths Valuation was the person who owned the property, or who worked as the middleman for the owner. This person was called the “Immediate Lessor.”

I found a Charles Larkin in Griffiths Valuation in Bostoncommon, Civil Parish of Cloncurry, in Griffiths Valuation.

The valuation for Bostoncommon was completed by 1853, 8 years before Charles Larkin and Mary Callaghan were married. I don’t know if this Charles Larkin refers to your Thomas’s father, or perhaps his grandfather.

You can access Griffiths Valuation transcriptions and original copies, as well as Ordnance Surbey Maps maps for free at the askaboutireland website link at: http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml

The Griffiths Valuation transcription for Charles Larkin is below:

No. and Letters of Reference to Map: 6b
Civil Parish: Cloncurry
Townland: Bostoncommon
Occupier: Charles Larkin
Immediate Lessor: Free
Description of Tenement: House
Area of Land: - Acres: - Roods: - Perches:
Rateable Annual Valuation of Land: - Pounds
Rateable Annual Valuation of Buildings: 10 Shillings
Total Annual Valuation of Rateable Property: 10 Shillings
____

Griffiths Valuation shows that Charles Larkin was occupying only a house, without land, in Bostoncommon. It’s possible he could have been a day labourer helping farmers in the area. You’ll notice that for the Immediate Lessor for Charles Larkin, Griffiths Valuation notes, “Free.” This means that there is no lessor for the property, and that Charles is “squatting,” on the land without any legal title to it. For more information, see the Ask About Ireland website link at: http://tinyurl.com/cht9flk

If you access Griffiths Valuation for Bostoncommon, you’ll see listed there are 17 occupiers listed in the townland. Of these, 16 are shown to have “Free” listed as the Immediate Lessor,” meaning they too were squatters on the land.

The Map number at the top of the valuation entry (6b) refers to an Ordnance Survey Map from the time period showing where Charles Larkin was living when Griffiths Valuation was enumerated. You can view this map at:
http://tinyurl.com/ch87m2n

Once at the map you’ll have to enlarge it quite a bit to view Bostoncommon, which appears to be split into a north Bostoncommon and a south Bostoncommon. I couldn’t find Map number 6b in either section of Bostoncommon. This is probably due to Charles living in a house which was too small to indicate on the map. Or perhaps I missed locating 6b on the map.

Getting back to the Griffiths Valuation entry for Charles Larkin, the value of his house was listed as 10 Shillings. He would not have to pay tax on the house, as only those Occupiers with property valued over 5 Pounds, had to pay a percentage of the value of the property they were leasing, toward the tax.

I then looked for any Callaghans in Griffiths Valuation who may have been living in Bostoncommon or in another townland in the Cloncurry Civil Parish. I didn’t locate any Callaghans in either Bostoncommon or in the Cloncurry Civil Parish.

Next I wanted to see if I could uncover the baptism indexes for Charles Larkin and Mary Callaghan at the IFHF website for County Kildare. Specifically, I wanted to see if they had been baptized in the Kildare Catholic Church. Earlier, you saw the marriage index for them, showing they married in 1861. I figured if they had married in 1861, they may have been born anytime in the 1830s or perhaps early 1840s.

I didn’t find a baptism index for Charles Larkin recorded in the Kildare Catholic Church or in any other church parish in Kildare. He may have been baptized in a church whose records no longer exist, or whose records have not been indexed or transcribed by the IFHF for County Kildare.

I did find a baptism index that may pertain to your Mary Callaghan, however. This index shows that Mary was baptized in the Kildare Catholic Church in 1837. Indexes from the IFHF do not automatically provide you with the names of a child’s parents. You either have to know their names or find out what their names were through additional research. The other two options are to guess what their first names were, or to go ahead and order the transcription of the baptism to find out what they were.

I wanted to see if I could guess the first names of Mary’s parents. The IFHF search engine accepted Thomas for her father and Wini for her mother. I believe Wini stands for Winifred or Winnifred.

The index is below:

1 match for the search criteria: Callaghan (plus variants) Mary 1837 Parish: KILDARE (RC)

Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. Kildare
Surname: Callaghan
First Name: Mary
Father's Surname: Callaghan
Father's First Name: Thomas
Mother's Surname:
Mother's First Name: Wini

____

Next I wanted to see if I could find Wini’s maiden name. To do this I went to the Irish Times website link for the 10 most common surnames found in the Civil Parish of Cloncurry as recorded in Griffiths Valuation in 1851. I figured one of the surnames may be Mary’s maiden name.

The Irish Times link can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/cclf99d

Once at the page scroll down past the names of the townlands found in the Cloncurry Civil Parish, until you come to the heading, “Most common surnames in Cloncurry in 1851.” You’ll see the following:

Murray 7
Archbold 6
Hyland 6
Moran 6

I took each of these surnames back to the IFHF search engine, to see if the search engine accepted any of them as Wini’s maiden name. The search engine accepted Maher, the last name on the list above, as her maiden surname:

1 match for the search criteria: Callaghan (plus variants) Mary 1837 Parish: KILDARE (RC)

I then found the baptism indexes for five more children of Thomas and Winifred Maher Callaghan. But, the search engine would not accept Wini as the spelling for first name of the children’s mother in any of the five indexes. The search engine however, did accept the spelling Winni.

These baptism indexes are for John (1836); James (1839); Thomas (1841); Esther (1844); and Teresa (1849).

If you back to the baptism indexes for the children of Charles Larkin and Mary Callaghan, you’ll see they had daughters named Winifred and Teresa.

The baptism indexes for the other five children of Thomas Callaghan and Winni Maher are below:

Next I looked for the marriage index for Thomas Callaghan and Winifred/Wini/Winn/Winni etc. Maher at the IFHF. I didn’t find it. But I did find a marriage index for a Thomas Callaghan and a Mini Maher. If you’ve ever looked at 19th century English cursive writing, you’ll see in many instances that the letters W and M are almost indistinguishable from one another. I believe the name Mini could be an error in transcription on the part of the IFHF, or perhaps the way the priest who recorded the marriage had abbreviated Winifred’s first name. In any event, I suspect the index below pertains to the marriage of the parents of your Mary Callaghan, who would marry Charles Larkin in 1861:

THE 1901 AND 1911 CENSUS RETURNS FOR IRELAND

I now wanted to see if I could find Charles and Mary Larkin and any of their children in the 1901 and 1911 census returns for Ireland. I located the Larkin family in both enumerations. The 1901census shows that Charles Larkin is a 57 year old agricultural labourer who cannot read and write. He was born in County Kildare and is listed as Roman Catholic. His 50 year old wife Mary was also born in County Kildare. She too cannot read and write. The address of the Larkins is House Number 6, Bostoncommon, District Electoral Division (DED) of Cloncurry, Kildare.

In the household with Charles and Mary is their 18 year old daughter Winifred, who was born in County Kildare. Winifred is shown to be employed as a housemaid. Unlike her parents she can read and write. Also in the household is a 42 year old lodger named Mary McGann, born in County Kildare. She cannot read or write. She is also not married.

The 1901 and the 1911 census returns for Ireland come from the National Archive of Ireland website link at:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

The 1901 census transcription for the Larkin family is below:

You can view a copy of the original 1901 census for the Larkin family from the National Archives of Ireland link at:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000905866/

The 1911 census shows the Larkin family residing in House Number 3, Bostoncommon, District Electoral Division (DED) of Cloncurry, Kildare. In this census Charles is shown to be an 80 year old agricultural labourer born in County Kildare. His wife Mary is 74. You’ll notice their ages increased by more than 10 years from the 1901 to the 1911 census enumerations. It would appear that their ages in the 1901 census are off by several years. Mary’s age of 74 in 1911 places her year of birth circa 1837. If you go back to the Kildare Catholic Church baptism index for Mary Callaghan, daughter of Thomas Callaghan and Wini Maher, you’ll see that Mary was baptized in 1837.

Also concerning Mary, the census shows that she and Charles as, of 1911, had been married for 50 years and in that time period had 10 children. Of the 10 children 8 were still alive as of 1911. Earlier, you saw the IFHF baptism indexes for 10 of their children. You also saw that their marriage took place in 1861. This was 50 years before the 1911 census was enumerated.

In the household with Charles and Mary is their 26 year old daughter Winifred, and their 21 year old niece, Annie Darbyshire, who is married, though Annie’s husband is not in the household with her. Also in the household is 55 year old Mary McClom. I believe this Mary McClom would be the Mary McGann found in the Larkin household in the 1901 census shown earlier:

Residents of a house 3 in Bostoncommon (Cloncurry, Kildare)

Surname Forename Age Sex Relation to head Religion Birthplace Occupation Literacy Irish Language
Marital Status Specified Illnesses Years Married Children Born Children Living

Larkin Charles 80 Male Head of Family Roman Catholic Ireland Co Kildare Agricultural Labourer Cannot read Married

Larkin Winifred 26 Female Daughter Roman Catholic Co Kildare Read and write Single
Darbyshire Annie 21 Female Niece Roman Catholic Co Kildare Read and write Married
McClom Mary 55 Female Boarder Roman Catholic Co Kildare Cannot read Single

A copy of the 1911 census for the Larkin family can be found at the National Archives of Ireland link at:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai002569872/

In a copy of the original 1911 census, you’ll see noted (after enlarging the image) that Annie Darbyshire had been married less than 1 year, and had no children.

I actually found 21 Annie Darbyshire once more in the 1911 census, this time in the household with her husband, 24 year old Percy Darbyshire, employed as plumber. Percy was born in England. He and Annie are living in an address of House Number 22.3 Clare Gate Street, Kildare Town, Ireland:

1911 Census of Ireland

Residents of a house 22.3 in Clare Gate Street (Kildare, Kildare)

Surname Forename Age Sex Relation to head Religion Birthplace Occupation Literacy Irish Language
Marital Status Specified Illnesses Years Married Children Born Children Living

Darbyshire Percy 24 Male Head of Family Roman Catholic England Plumber Read and write Married

A copy of the original 1911 census for Percy and Annie Darbyshire can be found at the National Archives link at:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai002577478/

In the copy of the original census on the line for Percy Darbyshire, you’ll see the notation, “under 1,” meaning the couple had been married less than a year. You’ll also see in the copy of the original 1911 census that Annie was born in County Kildare.

I then found a civil marriage index at Ancestry.com for Percy “Derbyshire.” The marriage was recorded in the Mountmellick (Queens County/County Offaly) Registration District for the June quarter of 1910. There are three other people in the index who were married at the same time as Percy. These are Anne Murphy, Mary Kavanagh, and Michael Byrne. Percy Derbyshire would have married Anne Murphy:

Annie Murphy Darbyshire/Derbyshire may have been the daughter of a sister of Charles Larkin or Mary Callaghan.

Next I looked for the death indexes for Charles Larkin and Mary Larkin. I found what may be the death index for Charles Larkin at Ancestry.com. This index shows the death of a Charles Larkin recorded in the Edenderry Registration District for the March quarter of 1917. At the time he died Charles was listed as being 88 years old. The 1911 census had shown that Charles was 80, and so his age between the census and the 1917 date of death, while not exact, is close enough to note that this death may very well refer to your Charles Larkin.

Edenderry is located in County Offaly, but when Charles died this county was known as Kings County. Edenderry would have been the registration district for portions of Kings County and County Kildare where births, marriages, and deaths were recorded.

Bostoncommon, Kildare, and Edenderry, County Laois, are approximately between 13 and 15 miles from one another, depending on the route you take between the two towns. I’ll have more on this later.

The death index for Charles Larkin follows:

The death record for Charles Larkin can be ordered from the GRO in Roscommon Town. If you order the death record, see who is listed as the informant who reported the death to the local registrar, as the informant would likely be a relative of his, perhaps one of his children.

Next I found the death index for a Mary Larkin also recorded in the Edenderry Registration District. This index shows Mary’s death recorded in the March quarter of 1912. Her age at death is listed as 75. The 1911 census had shown that Mary was 74, with an estimated birth year of 1837. Again, I believe there is a good chance this death index refers to your Mary Larkin

If you order Mary’s death record from the GRO see if her husband Charles Larkin is named as the informant to her death. If not, perhaps one of Mary’s children informed the local registrar about the death.

To view a Google Map of Edenderry, County Offaly, go to the following link: http://tinyurl.com/ck4qn7v

Once at the map you’ll see the letter A pointing to Edenderry near where the Carrick, Dublin, and St. Mary’s Roads intersect. Off the map, in the left margin of the page, you’ll see highlighted in blue a prompt for “Directions.” Click on Directions and a box labeled A will appear. In the A box, type in Bostoncommon, Kildare, Ireland, and then click on “Get Directions.” You’ll see that Bostoncommon and Edenderry are from 20.7 kilometers to 25 kilometers distant from each other. This is about 12,9 to 15.5 miles, depending upon which route between the two towns you take. The map will also show you the border between County Kildare and County Offaly.

Next, go back to the A and B boxes in the left margin of the map page. Erase Edenderry, Co. Offaly, Ireland, and type in Kildare Town, Kildare, Ireland. Then click on “Get Directions.” The map that appears shows that Bostoncommon and Kildare Town are anywhere between 10.3 kilometers and 12.2 kilometers (6.4 miles and 7.5 miles) from each other, depending on the route you take.

CONCLUSION

Before ordering any birth or marriage transcriptions from the IFHF, and before ordering any films from the Family History Center, or birth, marriage, or death records from the GRO, I recommend that you access the same indexes that I did, to see if you agree that these records pertain to the Larkin and Callaghan, and the related surnames you may be looking for. Also by going to the IFHF and LDS search engines you may find ancestors that I missed locating or was unaware of when I was researching your direct lines.

Best of Luck,

Dave Boylan
