Looking for information on Kelly family from Clownings, Newbridge Parish, County Kildare. William Kelly and Brigid Flood had the following children, Christopher Kelly, born Sept 1847, William Kelly, born June 1843 and Christopher and Bridget born Dec 1840. I am guessing that the first Christopher died and they named another male child Christopher....the second Christopher maybe my great, great grandfather. I have information that Christopher was born on September 18th, 1847, 5 days later than the date of September 12th 1847 that is recorded for baptism. Death certificate for Christopher has father listed as William, but mother as Elizabeth Dillon (Dennel). Any information would be most appreciated.

It was common in Ireland to give the next child of the same gender the name of a deceased child. It is possible someone transcribed the birth and christening wrong. Five days would be quite normal as soon after first as possible. If the mother went to her mother's for the delivery the child
would be baptised at mother's church. Which often causes confusion. Often the marriage also took place in the bride's parish, making it look as though they moved.

There are Dillon's in the same Parish's Great Connell for instance..

The telephone book has several hundred Kelly's, but 90 in the Naas area. Woodland is mentioned, Newbridge. Same for
the name Dillon and 52 Floods.

In the Griiffith Valuation the townland of Clownings was in two Parish's Great Connell and Whitechurch which may have been emalgamated by now. However at the time 1853 two William Kelly's meet part of the description. As Christopher is not named after his father, it maybe his grandfather's first name. There are 8 Christopher's in 1853.

Did Christopher have any children in Ireland as being born 1847 he would be having his own children by about 1867+. If so you should be able to find those on the website
www.familysearch.org

Kildare also belongs to an Irish History Foundation. A pay website although not for profit. A birth record should give you the proper maiden name for mother. Plus the births of the other children

The first mother Bridget may have died and Elizabeth be a later mother and if she raised the children he may have considered her his mother!
