His correct name was Otherish Northam. he died in September 1864 at Andersonville prison. he served in the 6th Michigan Calvary Reg. which was commanded by
George Armstrong Custer.

My great, great grandfather Eli A Northam was his brother.
Eli died in June 1862 as a result of wounds suffered in the battle of Shiloh.

Eli had four sons. Simon died at Andersonville in Aug of 1864 one month prior to his uncle Otherish's death.

Eli and Otherish came from the upper New York area around the 1850's. Eli settled in Wisconsin while Otherish
settled in Michigan.

Look forward to your response.

Hello,

Otherish Northam is the individual who died at Andersonville Prison in Sept.1864. He was the brother of my great, great grandfather Eli Northam-who died after the Shiloh battle.

Otherish's nephew - Simon also died at Andersonville am onth before Otherish. I believe both were captured at the battle of Chickamunga.

Do you have any data on this line of Northams - which came from both Wisconsin( Eli, etc) and Michigan(Otherish)? Both originally came from upper NewYork around 1850s.

Best Regards,

Dan Northam

I wasn't aware of Otheniah's brother Eli, or the Wisconsin connection. I do know that he had a brother Ebenezer W. who was 2 yrs. his senior and resided in Kent Co., MI at the time of the 1850 census w/Otheniah (aka "Tomkins") and Elias Northam (59 yrs.). I had assumed that this Elias was Otheniah & Ebenezer's father. Is this a correct assumption???
Otheniah married DELANY McCLURE, on 29 May 1853 in Wyoming, Kent Co., Michigan. They had one child, MARY ELLEN NORTHAM, b. 1 Oct. 1858 in Grand Rapids, Kent Co., Michigan. On 13 Dec. 1869 full guardianship of this child was given to Roxanna W. Gorham as both parents deceased. DELANY remarried in Mar. 1869 to William Amsbary in Kent Co., Mich.
I have a photo of Otheniah's headstone, and will gladly share that and any other info you may be interested in. please contact me directly for this.
