Sarah Ann Rhoades was born 11/24/1857,
possibly born in TX to Elizabeth Jane Rhoades
and a pioneer doctor named Rhoades. She had
six siblings. A sister Martha Jane survived
to adulthood along with one other sibling.
Sarah married John Hill McCleskey in 1876 in
Hood Co., TX. Martha Jane married Green
Spenser McCleskey about 1885, possibly in or
around Coryell Co., TX. Any information on
this family would be greated.

Surnames: Rhoades, McCleskey, Freeman
I have a Rhoades-McClesky connection, but it's not
as you described. Our Sarah Rhoades married John B.
McCleskey. She was the daughter of James L. Freeman
whose wife died in 1862 in Bastrop cty. I don't know
where she married but the McCleskeys ended up in the
Gunsight community in Stephens cty. in West Central
Texas. They donated the land for the cemetery there.
If any of this clicks, let me know.

Just noticed your message on the board.
Do you live in Tx? I am very familiar with Gunsight.
For 2 years I have been trailing my ancestors around the country side. Thay seem to have moved in groups.
Starting with my dad's [Sir Humphrey's] Gilbert's who landed up north in MD, moved to Pa.and Plymouth [Washington Co NC/TN/VA] and Pasquotank NC.The Walker's, Bushes and Davises must have moved along with them because they can be found together. I have 2 Wiggins ancestors through both the Gilbert and Ellis sides.
The Crockett's who married Gilbert's were in MD., then Pa, Tn, Va, and NC. A couple of weeks ago I found part of the Crockett/Gilbert families in Claiborne Co Tn living among my dad's Pierce, Gibson, Dungan,Ford, Ellis, Sims and Harper relatives. Also there were my mother's Awalt, Eppler, Pierce, Thomas, Massengill and Cobb, Jenkins groups. My mother also has Gibson/Pierce ancestors.
I am now trying to located Nancy Rhodes and Samuel Bradshaw who were in the same area. I have Weaver/Pierce
ancestors who came from Ala.and Miss. to Bastrop Co Tx. as well as Johnson's. My Jefferson Johnson married a Pierce and his their son married a Eppler/Awalt. My Minerva Awalt descends from the Leflore Chocktaw Indian family through the Bradshaw/Rhodes ancestors. William Gilbert who married Nancy Trafton also married into this indian group..The Trafton name was in Pasquotank NC earlier with the Gilberts.
Some of the folks moved to Ark. I have been searching for Charlie Gilbert cir. 1720 and after who married an indian lady. My great-grand father was Timothy Gilbert. His
siblings were named Eliza, Martin, Penelope, Oliver, James,Lenora, Floretta and Isaac. Some of the Ellis/Crockett/Hodges/Ford/Witherspoon relatives are buried nearby. The Awalt/Eppler/Johnson/Pierce family is buried at Cisco not far from Gunsight.
Sorry for the long explaination but I was amazed to find both sides of the family following the same moving patterns.
will share information with anyone who is interested.
thank you kindly,
Sam

I had the information about your Sarah Freeman marrying James B. McCleskey. This McCleskey line is different from the line I am researching. If you visit the McCleskey Rootsweb mail list, you'll find others who may be related to Sarah Freeman McCleskey's line. Good luck with your research.

An interesting note from my database is that a William Harrison Johnson (no other information is known) married Joe Allie McCleskey. They married and lived in the Parker Co., TX, area and are buried around Wichita Falls, TX, both near Eastland Co., where Cisco is located. Also, I have an extensive Pierce/Pearce family tree (gathered because a Pierce married into my TN Rhoades line) in McCullough Co., TX. That Pierce line came to TX from AL and originated in VA. If you'd like the information in a descendant's tree, let me know; my email is mscaleb@texas.net.

Sam,

Good to hear from you. Yes, I live in Abilene.
My family was the Rhoades/Yates clan (Elisha Jefferson
"Lish") son of EJR ("Jeff) whose father also EJR married Eliza (Elizabeth) Leflore (Lefleur). Lish married Tex Ann Freeman (sister to Sarah McClesky (m. John) who donated the site for the cemetery at Gunsight.

They did move in groups. Jeff & Eliza moved from Miss.
to Williamson cty. Tenn. Do you know what happened to them?
Did they die there? From there Lish & family (he had four to
five wives-not all at the same time!) moved to Johnson then
Scott cty. Ark. arriving Austin 1860-61. He died at 52 in
Austin area (to my knowledge no grave found yet). Some of
them ended up in Bastrop then many migrated north to Coryell, Bell & Lampassas cties. Two of Lish's older kids
married two of Susan Yates's-she was his 4th/5th wife.
(There is supposedly a letter from the Christian Church in
Boone's Township, Scott cty. recommeding them to other churches)

I have hit a stump in finding info on EJR#1 in either Miss
or South Carolina where supposedly he was born. Same is
true of Eliza. Some say she descended from Greenwood Leflore; some from Michael.

Where are you tied into the Rhoades? There are several
folks in the family who've worked on geneology:
Ruby King (Belton, TX) Milred Virrus, Etna Rhoades Scott,
Kenneth Rhoades. Also some lately I've seen are
Gerry Rhoades, Jimmie Eash, Loy Flick. I supposed you've
seen some of these.

It seems like those of us in the smaller "Rhoades neighborhood" need to communicate more closely. I'll admit
that at times I'm lazy and don't stay after it. I feel that this is really important for our kids to know.

Blessings,

Jack Walker
