Lura E Runkel, died in 1943. Her obituary appeared in the Superior (WI) Telegram on 19 Feb 1943. She taught or administered several schools- Blaine School; Buffalo Co. WI Training School in Alma WI; Grand Rapids, MI; Cleveland OH Technical High School; and in several schools in Superior WI. She was a graduate of Chicago University Teacher's College in NYC. She co-wrote the Elson/Runkel Series Readers. She had a brother, Leon RUNKEL.

I believe her father's name was Frederick RUNKEL (b. ca. 1849, in Lowell, Dodge Co., WI). I believe the same Frederick RUNKEL was the son of Mary Katherine RUNKEL (1812-1880) and John Jacob RUNKEL (1807-1893). Mary Katherine RUNKEL was the daughter of Elizabeth (HESS) and John Christian RUNKEL (1782-1860). They came to WI circa 1847 from Rengsdorf, Neuwied, Koblenz, Prussia.

This branch of the RUNKEL family is mentioned in the back of the book, "The Runkel Family, being an account of the Runkels in Europe, and their descendants in America" by Ben. Van D. Fisher, 1899, New York, T. A. Wright, Publisher. The author does not say how the Wisconsin RUNKELs are connected.

I don't know if her brother had any children. He lived in MN in 1943. Her father had many siblings and their descendants may appreciate a copy of the book.

Nancy, I see you are connected to Freas. If your Freas come from New Jersey, Northampton County PA, or Columbia County PA, please email me privately to share info. As for Runkel, there is an 1899 book, The Runkle Family, by Ben Van Dorn Fisher, that may provide information about the RUNLELs of Berks County. Again, please email me privately if you want more information, as I have this book.

Cathy, I have been looking for info on a "John Christian Runkel" with the same 1782-1860 dates that you mentioned. Where can you direct me for more data?
My rough tree shows his son as John Phillip Runkel (1817-1872) and his son as John George Runkel (1856-1919) and his son as George Wallace Runkel (1884-1947) and these are all WI Runkels. I'm only starting with these names and some dates and searching for details.
Thank You, Jim Runkel email:runjim2000@hotmail.com

My father, Chuck Runkel, grew up in Madison, WI. He was son of Laverne & Dorothy Runkel and I'm trying to track their roots.
Germany I'm told. But Dorothy's mother was an orphan and we have no other information.

Is the book available for purchase anywhere? Or is it available at a Library? I have never heard of it. If it is not available, is it possible to get a copy? I would be willing to pay for it. My Mother was Edith Margaret Runkel (Jacob, Jacob, Joseph Runkel). Please contact me at claudiarriley@msn.com
