THE FOLLOWING IS AN ANALYSIS OF THE FAUQUIER PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX LIST, FPPT, AND INCLUDES MY CONCLUSIONS, ANNOTATIONS, AND FAMILY GROUPINGS. OTHER DOCUMENTS HAVE BEEN USED TO HELP DETERMINE THE FAMILY GROUPINGS. THE NAMES OF PERSONS APPEARING IN THE TAX LISTS ARE CAPITALIZED WHILE NAMES OBTAINED FROM OTHER DOCUMENTS ARE IN LOWER CASE.

Asterisked (*) names are supported by either the Overwharton Parish Records (Index OPR) or the Fauquier Personal Property Tax List (Index FPPT). All other names are obtained from other sources.

It is believed that the start of this family is with James Heiffling. the immigrant ancestor, geologist, employed by a Swiss adventurer and land colonizer, Baron de Graffenreid, and was reported by word of mouth by members of the Heflin Family living in Stafford County, Virginia, to have explored the tidewater inland from Virginia to the Carolinas searching for gold and silver. In Stafford County, there is a location called Gold Vein, and near by a spring of water known as Heflin Spring. For whom the spring was named is not known at this time.

James Heiffling left at least two sons and a daughter. They were William, James and Anna.

In 1782, WILLIAM HEAFLON (FPPT 33) was listed for the first and last time. He owned two horses and 2 cattle. He was 65 years of age at this time. WILLIAM HEAFLON is identified as the father of SIMON HEFLING (FPPT 2), WILLIAM HEFFERLIN (FPPT 4), and JAMES HEFLING (FPPT 1).

It is believed that the start of this family is with James Heifling. the immigrant ancestor, geologist, employed by a Swiss adventurer and land colonizer, Baron de Graffenreid, and was reported
by word of mouth by members of the Heflin Family living in Stafford County, Virginia, to have
explored the tidewater inland from Virginia to the Carolinas searching for gold and silver. In Stafford County, there is a location called Gold Vein, and near by a spring of water known as Heflin Spring.
For whom the spring was named is not known at this time.

James Heiffling left at least two sons and a daughter. They were William (FPPT 33), James
and Anna.

FPPT 4 WILLIAM HEFFERLIN & MARGARET NANCY HADDOX (FPPT 13)

WILLIAM HEFFERLIN (FPPT 4) was the first son of WILLIAM HEAFLON (FPPT 33) being born on 7 March 1740 as reported the Overwharton Parish Records of Aquia, Stafford Co., VA.

In 1782, WILLIAM HEFFERLIN is listed for the first time owning one horse and three cattle. From 1783 through 1786, WILLIAM HEFFERLIN was not listed, either to unreadable microfilm or otherwise. It should be noted that the surname was spelled Heflon in the Overwharton Parish Records, OPR 2, Stafford Co., VA.

In 1787, WILLIAM HEFLING reappears at the age of 47 years, being listed as owning 2 horses and 6 cattle.

In 1788 & 1789, WILLIAM HEFLING was listed with 2 horses. WILLIAM HEFLING and JAMES HEFLING (FPPT 1) were adjacent to each other in the 1789 Tax List indicating a relationship. In fact, JAMES HEFLING is WILLIAM HEFLING'S and SIMON HEFLING'S brother. WILLIAM HEFLING married Zillah Collins in 1789.

In 1790 thru 1792, WILLIAM HEFLING is listed as owning 3 horses. In 1792, William Hefling and James Hefling were adjacent to each other in the tax list, suggestin a close relationship. In 1794, he is listed with only 2 horses, and he is listed adjacently to Ezekial and Abraham Haddox suggesting that it is probably WILLIAM HEFLING that married MARGARET NANCY HADDOX. This will become evident in 1803 when WILLIAM HEFLING is no longer listed (Assumed that he died in 1802) and MARGARET is listed for the first time.

In 1795, some Holtzclaw surnames are listed near by WILLIAM HEFLING'S listing (2 horses) suggesting a Germanna connection.

In 1796 and 1797, WILLIAM HEFLING is listed with 3 horses, and two sons as tithables, YEARBY HEFLING (FPPT 43) and WILLIAM HEFLING Jr. (FPPT 12). It should be noted that some of the early Hefling researchers were of the belief that Yearby of Yearling were should be interpreted as Jr. It is not believed that this is proper since, both names are listed at the same time and the numerical listing indicates 3 tithable's and 3 horses. This is the last listing for YEARBY HEFLING.

In 1798 thru 1800, WILLIAM HEFLIN (Age 58 at this time) is listed with his son WILLIAM HEFLIN Jr. (FPPT 12) as a tithable. The date of birth for WILLIAM HEFLIN Jr. needs to be researched further since the birthdate of 1777 (tombstone date) would place his age as 22 in 1799. He should have been listed as a separate tithable from 1799 through 1800 when he is still being listed as a tithable between 16 and 21 years of age.

In 1801 thru 1802, FPPT 4, WILLIAM HEFLON Sr. (62 years of age in 1802) AND
FPPT 12,WILLIAM HEFLON Jr. (25 years of age in 1802) are listed separately for the first time. Sr. with 3 horses and Jr. with 1 horse. This is the last listing for WILLIAM HEFLON Sr. and it is believed that he died in 1803.

In 1803, MARGARET NANCY (HADDOX) HEFLIN (FPPT 13) appears for the first time with 3 horses and no tithables and MARGARET is listed adjacently to WILLIAM HEFLIN Jr.
(FPPT 12)suggesting a relationship.

In 1804, MARGARET HEFLIN is listed with 2 horses. She is not listed in 1805.

In 1806, MARGARET HEFLIN is listed with 2 horses and this is the last time she is listed. Other sources indicates that Margaret died in 1807 in Walker Township, Rush Co., IN. Her absence from the Tax List after 1806 suggests that she removed to Indiana in 1806 or 1807 to live with relatives.

FPPT 12 WILLIAM HEFLIN Jr. & Susannah Sukey Ellis

WILLIAM HEFLIN Jr. appears to be the second or third child of WILLIAM HEFFERLIN AND MARGARET NANCY HADDOX. The first child was Nancy Ann Hefling b 1772 who married Abraham Haddox on 26 Jn 1795.

In 1801, WILLIAM HEFLON Jr. is listed, with 1 horse, separately from his father which suggests he was 21 years of age at this time. He is listed the same way thru 1804. He is not listed in 1805, but reappears in 1806. WILLIAM HEFLIN Jr. married Susannah Sukey Ellis in 1803.

In 1807, WILLIAM HEFLIN Jr. is not listed and no taxes were collected in 1808, since legislation was not passed. It is possible that he went to Indiana with his mother who was perhaps ill at the time since MARGARET NANCY HADDOX died in 1807.

From 1809 thru 1822 it was difficult to identify WILLIAM HEFLIN Jr. The identification was the result of working backwards from the 1823 listing which has a listing showing 2 titables, 1 slave over 12 years of age, and 3 horses. It fits that the other tithable in 1823 is his eldest son NATHAN ELLIS HEFLIN (FPPT 31) , who was the second child. The first was Ann Eliza Heflin who married Lawson Alexander Heflin. WILLIAM HEFLIN Jr. was traced back through the number of horses (3) he had in 1823.

In 1809 thru 1811, WILLIAM HEFLIN (Jr.) was listed with 1 tithable, 1 slave older than 16, and 2 horses. Note that the Jr. has been dropped from his name.

In 1812 thru 1814, WILLIAM HEFLIN is listed with 1 tithable, 1 slave between 12 and 16 years of age, and 3 horses.

In 1815, WILLIAM HEFLIN is listed with 1 tithable, 1 slave older than 16, and 3 horses. He is not listed from 1816 and 1817, but reappears in 1818.

In 1818 thru 1820, WILLIAM HEFLIN is listed with 1 tithable, 1 slave between 12 and 16 years of age, and 3 horses.

In 1821, WILLIAM HEFLIN is listed with 1 tithable and 3 horses, and does not appear in the 1822 tax list.

In 1823, WILLIAM HEFLIN is listed with 2 tithables, 1 slave older than 16 years of age, and 3 horses. The second tithable is FPPT 31, NATHAN ELLIS HEFLIN (his son). The listings for 1824 thru 1826are very similar except for the number and age of some slaves.

In 1827 and 1828, WILLIAM HEFLIN Iis listed with 2 tithables, 2 slaves, and 4 horses. The second tithable is identified as WILLIAM ELLIS HEFLIN (FPPT 32).

In 1829, WILLIAM HEFLIN (44 years old at this time) is listed with 3 tithables, 1 slave, and 4 horses. His two sons, NATHAN ELLIS, FPPT 31, and WILLIAM HEFLIN Jr. (III), FPPT 32, are the two tithables.

In 1830, WILLIAM HEFLIN is listed as being located in Thumb Run, VA with only 1 tithable, 1 slave, and 3 horses. Since NATHANIEL HEFLIN is listed separately for the first time, it is assumed that WILLIAM HEFLIN Jr. (III) departed the scene with one of the horses. WILLIAM HEFLIN Jr. (III) reappears in the 1831 listing. WILLIAM AND NATHANIEL HEFLIN were adjacent in the tax list, denoting a relationship.

In 1831 thru 1833, WILLIAM HEFLIN is listed as being located in Thumb Run, VA with 2 tithables. The other tithable is WILLIAM HEFLIN Jr. (III), FPPT 32. Thumb Run runs from Hume, South to the Western side of Orlean in Western Fauquier Co., VA.

In 1834, WILLIAM HEFLIN is listed with only 1 tithable, 2 slaves, and 3 horses. WILLIAM HEFLIN Jr. (FPPT32) is listed separately for the first time.

In 1835, WILLIAM HEFLIN is listed as being located in Carter Run, VA with 1 tithable and 2 horses. He is listed in the same way in 1836 (without location) and 1837 when he is back in Thumb Run, VA.

In 1838, WILLIAM HEFLIN is listed with 2 tithables and 3 horses. The second tithable is his son BENJAMIN FRANKLIN HEFLIN (FPPT 37). The family is not found in the 1839 listing.

In 1840, WILLIAM HEFLIN is listed with 2 tithables and 3 horses. The second tithable is again his son BENJAMIN FRANKLIN HEFLIN, FPPT 37. Note William's son Nathaniel was located at the Crossroads and they were both listed adjacently in the tax list.

In 1841, WILLIAM HEFLIN is listed with 2 tithables and 3 horses. The second tithable this time is his son LAFAYETTE HEFFLIN (FPPT 36).

In 1842, WILLIAM HEFLIN is listed with 1 tithable and 1 horse. BENJAMIN FRANKLIN HEFLIN (FPPT 37) is listed separately for the first time. Since, only 1 tithable is listed and two of the horses are gone it is assumed that his two sons left the nest and took the two horses.

In 1843, WILLIAM HEFLIN is listed with 1 tithable and 2 horses.

In 1844, WILLIAM HEFLIN is listed with 2 tithables and 4 horses. The second tithable is his son JAMES MADISON HEFLIN, FPPT 55. This is the last listing for WILLIAM HEFLIN in the Fauquier Personal Property Tax List. Since, WILLIAM HEFLIN died in 1853 in Lumberport, Harrison Co., WV it is assumed that he removed to that locale sometime after 1844.

FPPT 31 NATHAN ELLIS HEFLIN & Mary Ann Barbee.

NATHAN ELLIS HEFLIN born on 12 Oct 1804, is the second child and first son of WILLIAM HEFLIN Jr. (FPPT12) and Susannah Sukey Ellis.

In 1830 and 1831, NATHAN ELLIS HEFLIN is listed separately in the tax list for the first time with just 1 tithable and no slaves or horses. He then disappears from the tax list for 5 years until 1836.

In 1836, NATHAN HEFLIN located at the Cross Roads is listed with 1 tithable and 1 horse.

In 1837and 1839, NATHAN E. HEFLIN is listed with 1 tithable, 0 horses. He is not listed in 1838.

In 1840, Nathaniel E. Heflin located at the Crossroads is listed with 1 tithable, 1 slave older than 16, 1 slave between 12 and 16, and 0 horses. He is not listed in 1841,

In 1842, NATHAN E. HEFLIN is listed with 1 tithable, 3 slaves between 12 and 16, and 4 horses. He is listed adjacently to his brother Franklin in the tax list.

In 1843, NATHAN E. HEFLIN is listed adjacently to his brother Franklin with 1 tithable, 1 slave between 12 and 16, and 2 horses.

In 1844, NATHAN E. HEFLIN is listed adjacently to his father WILLIAM HEFLIN, and his brother, LFAYETTE HEFLIN and FRANKLIN HEFLIN. He is listed with 1 tithable, 1 slave between 12 and 16, and 4 horses.

In 1845, NATHAN E. HEFLIN is listed with 2 tithables, 1 slave over 16, and 4 horses. The second tithable is identified as Nathan's younger brother LIBBONS HEFLIN, FPPT 56 who probably did not want to remove to WV with his father in 1844.

In 1846, NATHAN E. HEFLIN is listed for the last time with 1 tithable, 1 slave over 16, and 4 horses.

FPPT 32 WILLIAM HEFLIN Jr. (III) & Jeminz Ann Jackson

WILLIAM ELLIS HEFLIN Jr. (III) was born on 8 December 1811 and was the fourth child and the second son of WILLIAM HEFLIN Jr. (FPPT 12) and Susannah Sukey Ellis.

In 1834, WILLIAM HEFLIN Jr. (III) is listed separately for the first time with 1 tithable and 2 horses.

In 1835, WILLIAM HEFLIN Jr. (III) is listed, for the last time, adjacently to his father with 1 tithable and no horses.

FPPT 44 MORGAN V. HEFLIN & (1) Elizabeth Moncrief, (2) Martha Jane Thorne

MORGAN V. HEFLIN was born on 11 November 1815, the seventh child of WILLIAM HEFLIN Jr. and Susannah Sukey Ellis.

In 1835, MORGAN HEFLIN of William was listed with 1 tithable and 2 horses. This is the only listing for MORGAN HEFLIN in the Fauquier Personal Property Tax List. It is expected that he removed to Indiana where he married in 1838 He died in Marion Co., IL in 1896.

FPPT 37 BENJAMIN FRANKLIN HEFLIN & Susan Holding Smith

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN HEFLIN was born on 4 April 1821, the tenth child of WILLIAM HEFLIN Jr. (FPPT 12) and Susannah Sukey Ellis.

In 1842 and 1843, FRANKLING HEFLIN was listed separately for the first time with 1 tithable and 1 horse. He was listed adjacently to his brother NATHAN E. HEFLIN (FPPT 31) and his father WILLIAM HEFLIN Jr. (FPPT 12).

In 1844, FRANKLIN HEFLIN was listed with 1 tithable and 0 horses.

In 1845 and 1846, FRANKLIN HEFLIN was listed with 1 tithable and 1 horse. This was the last listing for FRANKLIN HEFLIN.

FPPT 36 LAFAYETTE HEFLIN & (1) Martha Ellen Gabbert, (2) Mary Virginia Heaton

LAFAYETTE HEFLIN was born 26 May 1825 and was the twelfth child of WILLIAM HEFLIN Jr. and Susannah Sukey Ellis.

In 1844, FAYETTE HEFLIN was listed separately for the first time with 1 tithable and 0 horses. He was not listed in 1845.

In 1846, LAFAYETTE HEFLIN is listed with 1 tithable and 1 horse. This is the last time he is listed in the tax list. He removed to WV.

FPPT 1 JAMES HEFFERLIN

JAMES HEFFERLIN was born ca 1749.

In 1784, JAMES HEFFERLIN is listed for the first time with 1 tithable, 2 horses, and 2 cattle. In 1785 the mircrofilm was unreadable.

In 1786 and 1787, JAMES HEFFERLIN (HEFLING in 1787) is listed with 1 tithable, 1 horse, and 2 cattle. In both 1786 and 1787 JAMES HEFFERLIN is listed next to his brother SIMON HEFFERLIN (FPPT 2).

In 1788, JAMES HEFLING is listed with 2 tithables and 1 horse. One of the tithables is his son STUART HEFLING (FPPT 8) who is listed for the first time.

In 1789, JAMES HEFLING is listed with 2 tithables and 2 horses. STUART HEFLING is identified again. JAMES HEFLING is listed adjacently to his brother WILLIAM HEFLING (FPPT 4).

In 1790, JAMES HEFLING is listed with 1 tithable and 1 horse. His son STUART HEFLING is listed separately for the first time suggesting his birth year as ca 1769.

In 1791and 1792, JAMES HEFLING is listed with 1 tithable and 3 horses. He is listed adjacently to his brother WILLIAM HEFLING (FPPT 4) and his nephew GUS HEFLING (FPPT 3).

In 1792 thru 1797, JAMES HEFLING is listed with 1 tithable and 1 horse. It is interesting to note that he is listed adjacently to the Nay family of Jacob Nay, Jacob Nay Jr., William Nay, John Nay and Joseph Nay. JAMES HEFFLING'S daughter Elizabeth Hefferling will ultimately marry Vincent Nay the son of John Nay.

In 1798, JAMES HEFLIN is listed with 1 tithable and 0 horses. This may have been a recording error, since in 1799 he has the horse back.

In 1799, JAMES HAFLIN is listed with 1 tithable and 1 horse.

In 1800, JAMES HEFLON is listed with 1 tithable and 2 horses. Note that the surname has been seen as Heaflon, Hefferlin, Hefling, Hethling, Heflin, Haflin, & Heflon to this point in the tax list.

In 1801, JAMES HEFLIN is listed with 1 tithable and 1 horse.

In 1802, JAMES HEFLING is listed with 1 titahable and 2 horses, and is listed adjacently to the Nay family again.

In 1803, JAMES HEFLIN is listed with 2 tithables and 2 horses. His son WILLIAM HEFLIN (FPPT57) is identified for the first time. It is interesting to note that JAMES HEFLIN drops of the Fauquier Co., Personal Tax List in 1803, but resurfaces in 1810. According to the Nay Family History that the Nay's along with the Martin and Hefferling Families removed to West Virginia around 1803, but James Hefferling returned to Virginia, since it is reported in the Nay book that he did not like WV. James Hefferling appears again in the Fauquier Co. VA Personal Property Tax List in 1810, 1811, 1814, and 1816 through 1818. He is identified as a result of being on the same list as William Heflin Jr. (his nephew). The fact that he does not appear in the list in the years 1812 and 1813 suggests that he was perhaps in the war of 1812. It is expected that in 1819 he removed to WV again, but he did return to Fauquier Co., VA in 1825 when he and his wife Elizabeth deeded land to Strother Ficklin.

In 1810, JAMES HEFLIN is listed with 1 tithable and 2 horses.

In 1811, 1814, and 1816 JAMES HEFLIN is listed with 1 tithable and 1 horse.

In 1817, JAMES HEFLIN is listed with 1 tithable and 0 horses.

In 1818, JAMES HEFLIN is listed with 1 tithable and 1 horse. This is the last listing for JAMES HEFLIN in the FPPT.

FPPT 8 STUART HEFLING

STUART HEFLING was born ca 1769 the son of JAMES HEFFERLIN (FPPT 1).

In 1788 and 1789, STUART HEFLIN is listed as a tithable for JAMES HEFLING.

In 1790, STUART HEFLING is listed separately for the first time with 1 tithable and 1 horse. This is the last listing for STUART HEFLING and it is assumed that he removed to another location.

FPPT 57 WILLIAM HEFLIN

WILLIAM HEFLIN was born ca 1787 and is the son of JAMES HEFFERLIN (FPPT 1). He was listed as a tithable with his father in 1803, but is not listed again in the Fauquier Co., Personal Property Tax List. He obviously removed to West Virginia with his father in 1803 and did not return to Virginia with him in 1810. WILLIAM HEFLIN would have been about 23 years of age at this time.

FPPT 2 SIMON HEFFLING & Ailse Payne

SIMON HEFFLING was born on 1 October 1741, the son of WILLIAM HEAFLON (FPPT 33) and Margaret.

In 1782, SIMON HEFLIN was listed with 1 tithable, 1 Negro tithable, 2 horses, and 2 cattle.

In 1783, SIMON HEFLIN was listed with 1 tithable, 8 cattle, and 2 horses. He was not listed in 1784 and 1785.

In 1786, SIMON HEFFERLIN was listed with 1 tithable, 3 horses, and 5 cattle.

In 1787, SIMON HEFLING was listed with 2 tithable (>21), 3 horses, and 5 cattle. However, his son WILLIAM HEFLING (FPPT 9) was identified for the first time. It should be noted, that for whatever reason WILLIAM HEFLING is reported as living with his brother GUS HEFLING (FPPT 3) in 1788.

In 1788, SIMON HEFLING is listed with 2 tithable and 2 horses and in 1789 with 3 horses. In 1789, the Henry Hurst family was listed adjacently to SIMON HEFLING in the tax list.

In 1790 thru 1792, SIMON HEFLING is listed with 2 tithables and 3 horses. His daughter ELIZABETH HEFLING (FPPT 20) is identified for the first time.

In 1793, SIMON HEFLING is listed with 1 tithable and 3 horses. His son AUGUSTUS HEFLING (FPPT 3) was listed adjacently in the tax list.

In 1794 and 1795, SIMON HEFLING is listed with 1 tithable and 1 horse. This is the last time SIMON HEFLING appears in the tax list because he removed to Mason Co., KY in 1795. It appears that other family members removed with him also. His two sons, Marshall (b 1778) and Reuben (b 1795) had not reached tithable age prior to Simon's departure for KY and they do not appear as tithables in the FPPT Tax List.

FPPT 3 GUSTAVUS AUGUSTINE HEFLING & Ailse Payne

In 1787, GUS HEFLING was listed for the first time, adjacently to his uncle WILLIAM HEFLING (FPPT 4) with 1 tithable, 1 horse and 2 cattle.

In 1788, GUS HEFLING is listed with 1 tithable and 2 horses. Listed with his is SIMON HEFLING'S (FPPT 2) son WILLIAM HEFLING (FPPT 9), but he does not show as a tithable indicated that GUS HEFLING was not responsible for the tax.

In 1789, GUS HEFLING is listed with 2 tithables and 2 horses. WILLIAM HEFLING (FPPT 9), SIMON'S son, is listed with the family and is now listed as a tithable for GUS.

In 1790, AUGUSTUS HEFLING is listed with 1 tithable and 1 horse. WILLIAM HEFLING Jr. (FPPT 9) is listed separately for the first time. It is believed that the Jr. was added to his name to distinguish him from his uncle WILLIAM HEFLING (FPPT 4).

In 1791, AUGUSTINE HEFLING is listed with 2 tithables and 3 horses. ELIJAH JONES (FPPT 10) is living with the family and is identified as the man who married AUGUSTINE'S sister Eliza in 1792.

In 1792 thru 1794, GUS HEFLING is listed with 1 tithable and 2 horses. ELIJAH JONES is not listed as living with the family and is not listed separately. GUS HEFLING is not listed in the tax list after 1794 and it is suspected that he preceded his father by less than one year in removing to Mason Co., KY.

FPPT 9 WILLIAM HEFLING

WILLIAM HEFLING was born ca 1769 is the son of SIMON HEFLIN (FPPT 2).

In 1787, FPPT 9, WILLIAM HEFLING is listed as a tithe to his father SIMON HEFLING,
FPPT 2.

In 1788 AND 1789, FPPT 9, WILLIAM HEFLING is listed as a tithe to GUS HEFLIN (FPPT 3)

In 1790, WILLIAM HEFLING Jr. (FPPT 9) is listed separately for the first time. It is believed that the Jr. was added to his name to distinguish him from his uncle WILLIAM HELFING (FPPT 4). He does not appear in the tax list after 1790 and it is believed that he removed to another locale.

You can ask them at Maysville for them to make a copy. I went there, personally, and got one. I have no way to scan it. Don

I had a Simon HEFLIN, in Cannon Co., TN., in the mid-19th century. He apparently had a brother, Absalom, and a father, Fielding.

Is "my" Simon HEFLIN in any way related to "your" Simon HEFLIN?

Sorry, anyone who read my posting.
Those HEFLINs of mine were in the Clarksville, TN, area, although Fielding and the brothers Simon/Absalom were apparently born in NC, as I recall.

No, my Simon was b. 1741 in Stafford Co., VA and d. in Faquier Co., VA in 1803. I do have some data on your Simon: b 17 Nov 1783 Beaverdam Cr., Granville Co., NC s/o Fielding & Elizaabeth SMITH.
Let me know what else you might want to know. I researched 5 yrs for these NC Heflins.

Sure. Terrell Heflin b. 13 Nov 1804 in Beaverdam Cr. Granville, NC AND Sarah WILLIAMS b. 12 Oct 1809 in Spartenburg Co., SC were mar. on 3 Oct 1826 in Moulton, Lawrence Co., AL. He was the s/o James M. Heflin & Elizabeth PAYNE. At least that was the conjecture of Edith Smith, John L. Heflin, & me back in 1974.

What does the 'M' stand for in James M. Heflin? Were Martin Heflin and Susannah Heflin his parents? If so, who were the parents of Susannah Heflin? Do you know who the parents were of Sarah Williams or Elizabeth Payne?
