I have records of the birth of Mark Sawyer in 1813 in Currituck County, NC. Mark died in May 1884 in Yamhill County, Oregon. He married Susan James of Tennessee in Marshall County, Ill in 1837. They are my Oregon Trail ancestral connections.

Roger,

I just noticed that you have Jacob Sawyer, Jr.'s father listed as Jacob Sayer, Sr.

I have never been able to determine who Jacob Sawyer, Jr.'s father was. Where did you find this and what do you have on him?

Jacob Sawyer, Jr. is my 5th great grandfather. He wrote his will on 4 Aug 1819 but it was not proven until Aug 1827.

Hello. I believe this is the same family line I am looking at.

But I have further down the list.

Mark Sawyer and Susanah James.
Father and Mother to Andrew J Sawyer who married Mary E McKinley.
Father and Mother to Roberta L Sawyer Who Married William Gardner(my great-great grandfather)

Is this of the same you think?

I have nine children listed for Mark and Susannah James Sawyer but none of them are Andrew J. Sawyer or Roberta L. Sawyer. What are the birth dates for these two children and where were they born.

I assume we are talking about the same people. Mark was born 28 Sep 1813 in Currituck Co., NC and d. 12 Apr 1884 in Yamhill Co., OR.

Most of my information about Mark Sawyer's family is about his ancestors.

Hi to the "other" Jean who researches Sawyers in NC.
This is from Seattle Jean.
Mark and Susannah James Sawyer had 17 BIRTHS, but only 13 lived to adulthood.
They are:
1 Ellis B. Sawyer female born 1839 in Lacon, IL
2 Sarah E. Sawyer born 1840 in Lacon, IL (my ancestor)
3 Margaret Sawyer born 1841 in Lacon, IL
4 Almira Sawyer born 1845 in Lacon, IL
5 Jordan Sawyer infant death in 1845
6 George Henry Sawyer born 1847 in Linn City, Oregon Territory
7 John R. Sawyer born 1849 in Wheatland, Oregon
8 Russell Sawyer infant death in 1850
9 Andrew Jackson Sawyer born 1852 in Wheatland, Oregon Terr.
10 Evangeline Sawyer born 1854 in Wheatland, Oregon Terr.
11 Infant Sawyer died 1854
12 Susanne Jane Sawyer born 1855 Wheatland
13 Mark Emery Sawyer born 1857 Wheatland
14 Franklin Locke Sawyer born 1869 Wheatland
15Infant death 1859
16 Arthur Sawyer born 1861 died 1862
17 Damon Elliott Sawyer born 1864

Note: In the 1850-1860s Wheatland was a busy shipping port on the Willamette River north of today's state capitol, Salem. Wheat grown nearby was shipped north to Portland. The only remaining sign of the town is the Wheatland Ferry that crosses the W. River. My maternal great grandfather, George Bennett Antrim once built one of the ferries used in the busy days of Wheatland. The Sawyer Oregon Donation Land Claim is marked today by a stone bearing a bronze plaque identifying the site of their ODLClaim. The stone is in the state right of way on a major highway between Salem and Dayton.

From this marker, one can look west to the small church surrounded by the cemetery use by all the Oregon Trail Pioneers who lived in this part of the beautiful Willamette Valley. Mark and Susannah's graves are there. I am have met two desc of Evangeline Sawyer and of course, of my ancestor, Sarah E. Sawyer who married Benjamin Antrim.

JeanO, I am now communicating with Roy Sawyer, Jr. of Currituck about Jesse and Jacob Sawyer info. He sent me a copy of photo said to be Jesse Sawyer. The source was from one of Evangeline's descendants, named Julie Warmington Jones still alive in Salem, Oregon, but not able to recall her many years of family history work.

I'm also in touch with Ralph Gardner who formerly shared Sawyer info with Julie Jones. He is desc of Andrew Jackson Sawyer, whose daughter Roberta Lee Sawyer married a Gardner. That's where Ralph's Gardner line starts.

Time to stop this posting.

Thank you for the names and dates of the additional children. I assume you meant Franklin Locke Sawyer was born in 1859 and not 1869.

Roy is certainly wealth of information.

I descend from Jesse's brother, Simeon Sawyer. My line stayed in Currituck Co.

Thanks again,

Mark Sawyer was one of 4 known sons of Jesse & Margaret (Gibson) Sawyer. The family lived in Currituck Co, NC until 1831 when they and the Forbes (some Whites) moved to Hopewell Twp, Marshall Co, IL.

In Sep 1830 Jesse Sawyer and Caleb Forbes (my direct line, also have Sawyers) went on horse back looking for land. They selected the IL land, went back to NC sold everything. In April 1931 they set out on a 5 month 1100 mile wagon trip to IL. On Sept 2 1831 the families arrived and were the first settlers in Hopewell twp, Marshall Co, IL.

My fingers really slipped up on Franklin Locke Sawyer's date of birth. My records read: 1860.
