I am a great grandson of Hugh Callahan born 1856 in Galena Illinois. I am researching my family ancestry, specifically I am hoping to find any information about Hugh’s father Edward Callahan born 1824 from Co Fermanagh Ireland as well any information about Edward’s wife Mary(Riley), his siblings ( Michael , James, Thomas, Edward?) many of which arrived in the US early to mid 1800’s and their father Thomas Callahan.

Below is the information I’ve gather thus far from cemetery tombstones, newspaper obituaries, court and census documents in Galena Illinois, and from the Galena Historical Society.

Facts:

Edward Callahan - from Co Fermanagh Ireland -born 1824.
His wife, Mary (Riley) Callahan - Ireland -born approx 1824
Arrived in Gilford County, Galena, Illinois (IL) in 1848 (land records)
Edward buys a farm 1848 in Guilford County, later selling to his brother Michael
Edward and Mary marry 5-31-1846 in Galena, IL (church records)

Daughter Mary A. 4yrs old born in 1846 (1850 census)
Son Thomas 2yrs old born in 1848 (1850 census)
Also living in the same house per 1850 census:
Martha Harmon age 33 from New York
Charles age 21 from IL
Mary age 5 from IL
Sarah age 3 from IL

Son Hugh born May 1856 (1860 census & Obit)

April 20th 1853 Edward buys a farm JoDaviess Co, IL
E1/2 of the SE1/4 Sec 19 Township 28, 80 acres for $350


Edward’s wife Mary died 8-31-1859 at home in Guilford Co. Edward was arrested for suspicion of murder.
2 weeks later he is released from jail. Galena Daily Courier dated Sept 1st and 3rd and the 19th show Edward was released and case dismissed.
Edward left town after the death of his wife Mary.
The Galena Advertiser on April 25th 1863 reports that Edward Callahan returns from Pikes Peak after an absence of four years and was shot dead during a disturbance in downtown Galena by Deputy Hopkins and Sheriff John Hawkins. Other unknown Callahan brothers were arrested.


The son, Hugh, my great grandfather, was living with his Uncle James Callahan on a farm in Sec 20 Guilford Township JoDaviess, IL.
(1860 and 1870 census shows Hugh at age 1 as nephew and then again age 12 as nephew.)

1860 through 1878
Property tax records are paid each year for Edwards Callahan 80 acres farm Sec 19 Township 28 Guilford
Not sure who was living there, no name was signed in the books, possibly Edward’s brothers were operating the farm starting 1860 through 1878
In 1879, however, Hugh Callahan son of Edward signs and pays the taxes on the farm.

Dec 23rd 1879 Hugh Callahan now age 23 buys the farm E1/2 of the SE1/4 Sec 19 Township 28, 80 acres from the late Edward Callahan his father. Present for the sale are Edwards brothers Michael and James.

Mar 20th 1884 Hugh Callahan age 28 sells the 80 acre farm to Lawrence Mahon for $2100

The same day Mar 20th 1884 Hugh Callahan age 28 buys from his Uncle James Callaghan E1/2 of the SW ¼ of Sec 20. 4 acres of the farm was donated for Taylor school house. The farm location is now the Owners Club in the Galena Territories the barn’s rock foundation still in place with the farm land mostly under water now.


1886-Hugh Callahan marriage to Catherine Bermingham 9-29-1886
They had two sons:
George born 2-12-1889
John J. born 6-22-1895

1912- Hugh and Catherine retire and move to 622 Franklin St Galena
George lives on the farm

1914- George and Christina Huilman married they lived Galena Territory Farm
Gert only child born here in 1915

1918- John J listed in WW1 France deployed for 11 months

1921- Catherine (Kate) Callahan Hugh’s wife dies

1925-John James Callahan marries Agnes Dillon 6-9-1925

1927- John F Callahan born 9-25-1927 on Franklin St Galena,IL



Dec 28th 1928 Hugh sells the Homestead to Leo Foley

Mentioned in Hugh Callahan Obit Jan 11, 1933: Hugh is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Edward Callahan born in Guilford Township in May 1856 and died at the home of his son John J. at age 76 yrs. He is survived by two sons George of Guilford and John J. fm Rawlins and his adopted daughter Irene in Dixon, IL and one sister H. Flannery.

I am a great grandson of Hugh Callahan born 1856 in Galena Illinois. 1904- Obit quote: on Thomas Callahan a brother to Edward: Of the five members of the immediate family of the deceased who came to this country in 1848, one, a brother Michael is still living.

1912- Death Certificate: on Michael Callahan brother to Edward list Thomas as Father.

1898- Obit quote: on James Callahan brother to Edward two brothers are living Michael and Thomas and one sister, Mrs Mcdeffet of Nebraska.

1824- Edward Callahan - from Co Fermanagh Ireland -born 1824.
1824- His wife, Mary (Riley) Callahan - Ireland -born approx 1824
1846- Edward and Mary marry 5-31-1846 at St Michaels Church in Galena, IL (church records)
1848- Arrived in Gilford County, Galena, Illinois (IL) in 1848 (land records)
1848- Edward buys a farm 1848 in Guilford County, later selling to his brother Michael

1860 through 1878

They had two sons:

John James. born 6-22-1895

1887- James Walter Callahan age 3 months 10-29-1887 died son of Hugh and Katie Callahan
Remains were interred in the Catholic Cemetery in East Galena, IL.

1891-John Callahan old settler of Galena born June 15th 1798 in the County Farmanagh,Ireland. John came to Amercia in early life, but soon returned to his native land and remained there until 1848 John now is age 50 when he again crossed the ocean and bought a farm in Guilford Township Galena,IL.

1898 March 15th, James Callahan born 1820 in the County Farmanagh, Ireland, brother to Edward and Thomas and Michael. James died at age 78 at his home on Dewey Ave Galena, IL. James age 33 the year 1853 travels to America directly to Galena joining several brothers already residing in Galena.

1904 Sept 20th, Thomas Callahan born 1830 in the County Farmanagh, Ireland, brother to Edward, Michael and James. Thomas died at age 74 at his home on Dewey Ave Galena, IL.


1912- Hugh Callahan age 56 and wife Catherine age 59 retires and moves to 622 Franklin St Galena.
George lives on the farm

1914- George Callahan age 25 is Hugh’s brother he marries Christina Huilman they live on Galena Territory Farm that Hugh and Catherine yet own. Gert only child born here in 1915

1918- John J age 23 listed in WW1 France deployed for 11 months

1921- Hugh’s wife Catherine (Kate) Callahan dies at age 68

1925-John J Callahan age 30 marries Agnes Dillon 6-9-1925

1927- John F Callahan born 9-25-1927 on Franklin St Galena, IL

1928-

1912 March 28th, Michael Callahan born 1829 from County Farmanagh, Ireland, brother to Edward, Thomas and James. Michael died at age 80 at his home on 316 Decatur Galena, IL.

1928 Dec 28th, Hugh sells the Homestead to Leo Foley

1933- Mentioned in Hugh Callahan Obit Jan 11, 1933: Hugh is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Edward Callahan born in Guilford Township in May 1856 and died at the home of his son John J. at age 76 yrs. He is survived by two sons George of Guilford and John J. fm Rawlins and his adopted daughter Irene in Dixon, IL and one sister H. Flannery from Omaha NE. and a brother Thomas Callahan from St Paul, MN and eight grand children.

I am very fimilar with John Hart Callahan family. His parents are is Michael & Jane (McQuillan) Callahan. McQuillan family produced a famous Hollywood Novel Writer F.Scott Fitzgerald such as "The Great Gatsby".

You may already have this info but if u search online for Mary McQuillan family tree you will find your John Hart Callahan.

If you have any info connecting Edward Callahan born 1824 to his siblings let me know.
