Just wanted to add another voice to the constant crashing of Family Tree Maker 2 for mac.

Currently using:
MBP 2012 Retina, 16gb, i7
Mountain Lion 10.8.2
All latest updates as of Feb24 for MB & FTM. No other apps running.
380 persons on tree.

Have tried:
Compacting File (which also causes crashes) to 0.00%.
Restarting Computer.
Disk Repairs.
Reinstallation of app.

Crashes occur:
During compacting.
During shutdown.
Most often during PDF export of tree.

Thoughts welcome!
Christopher

Have you installed 542 patch released today?

Still crashing?

Hi John,

I'm in Sweden here so just got the update now, installed. I've only had 5 minutes with the app but initially so far so good. Will report back here this weekend after I've had a chance to properly test things out.

There were a lot of bug fixes and maybe the one (or more) that may have been causing your problems have been addressed?

Be interested in hearing if you have any improvements?

I installed the new update today. At last I am able to sync trees and connect to the internet...However... I've been getting crashes when I try to switch over to a tree that is not sync'd to an online tree. Anyone else experiencing this?

Skemp11: Unfortunately no, I've not experienced this as I'm only using one tree which is connected to ancestry.com.

John: After using the app after the update for about 7 hours, I've surprisingly not had any usual crashes. Having said that, the exporting of large pdfs was the main offender and I should be ready to try this again later today or tomorrow. Will write again on this.

Yes, I am encountering the same problem. I hadn't associated it with switching over to another tree, but I had opened another tree. I posted on another thread. I had been able to sync, then downloaded the newest update, was still able to sync, but then late today I got a sync error. Obviously, many others are having problems too.

Thanks for your update.

After a complete reinstall of the app, updating the app, following their suggested (http://ancestry.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1370), and various other system wide clean/fixes I can confirm there's still crashing in various portions of the application. Most of the time it's random, primarily though it happens on PDF exports of created books under the publish tab.

The random crashes have been reduced significantly however.

My exported PDF book is about 750 pages with no automated reports, charts, contents or indexes. Just individual reports and media files adding up to about 800mb total.

I can't export any type of book. PDF, RTF, DOCX, or export it as a PDF via the PRINT option. As well, once the book passes a certain size, I cannot split up the export (export pages 1 to 200, then 201 to 400, etc...). It still crashes.

No other apps are running and I show plenty of memory available while running the export via the activity monitor. The app runs up to about 4GB of memory used before it crashes. I've also noticed that FTM is only a 32-bit app suggesting it can only use 4GB max of memory, true? Does this not seem like a severe limitation for a database application?

IMPORTANT UPDATE: I just discovered that while FTM says it supports Mountain Lion, Mountain Lion is a 64bit only environment and Family Tree Maker is a 32bit only application. According to various threads around the internet most 32bit apps simply won't run and if they do become very unstable when running in a 64bit environment.

Small update. After going through their 'fix' process 3x (per their request) I then sent a crash log. In the crash log it specifically states:

Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGABRT)
Exception Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at 0x0000000000000000

I'm no programmer, but this seems to be related to the app being 32bit vs 64bit environment. I realize you can run a 32bit in a 64bit but somewhere in there somethings screwy.

Another small update.

In regards to export PDF crashing, I now crash every single time on pdfs 400 pages or smaller with only media reports.

I've already tried to remove potentially offending pages, but there simply seems to be a maximum memory issue (as above, I have 16GB and 200GB HD space, should be more than enough).
