Descendants of Moses Mathews

This posting includes four generations of my grandmother's family. She was Jessie Pearl MATHEWS and married my grandfather John Francis (Frank) TIDWELL on June 23, 1912. Grandmother's line is from Tobias MATHEWS, a cleric and orator during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.

Phil, please contact me at email of:
marpat@ctaz.com. We are researching the same WRIGHT
family. Dr. Jocob Bowman Wright was my g.g.uncle.
He raised my b. grandfather's siblings after the
death of their parents, George Washington Wright I and
Eliza Jane Gresham, who had both died by 1864. Dr. Wright
took the youngest of th 9 children of his brother and raised
them in Grey Rock, Franklin Co., Texas. My g.g. grabdfather,
George Washington Wright II is buried in the Grey Rock Cemetery
which is where Dr. Wright, his wife, and my g
uncle Edward Young Wright are also burried. My grandmother
Margaret Edna Wright known as Maggie was born
in Franklin Co., Texas. My grandmother returned
to Stewart Co., Georgia after the death of her
father where she married Cicero Cyril Hobbs.
I have two other Wright cousins that I can put
you in touch with, one is a direct descendant of
Dr. Wright. I hope you find this message soon.

John P. Garner was my G-G Grandfather and a Civil War veteran and lived in Pike County, GA. That's adjacent to Meriwether. However my G Grandfather's name was Richard Henry and is not on your list of John P.'s children. Richard was also a veteran and fought side by side with his Dad in the last battles of the war. The date seems sensible though since Richard died in 1908 at 62. If you have anything at all on Robert P. I would like to know more. Thanks, John

From the Dr. Christopher James Mathews Family History Manuscript:

The following was taken from papers of Dr. James Christopher Mathews; the data was contained in one long paragraph. I have divided the data into several paragraphs with Dr. Mathews' sentence structure intact. This is not the best example of his composition and writing ability. My copy of manuscript is poor in quality and difficult to read. Mistakes may have been made in transcribing the information. I have added text within ( ) to clarify the report.

Seventh (child of Abram Mathews, Jr.)

Eliza Mathews, daughter of Abram Mathews, Sr., Meriwether County, married John P. Garner of Pike County, Ga. and became the parents of Mr. Robert Garner who resides in Anniston, Ala. and is unmarried.

Their second son, Rev. William Garner, who is quite a noted missionary Baptist minister of Ga., resides in Eatenton with his family, and they are quite popular where they are known.

Mr. Thomas Garner, third son of Eliza Mathews Garner died some years ago in California, leaving a wife and several children.

Prof. James Garner, son of Eliza Mathews Garner and quite a successful schoolteacher of Georgia, moved some years ago to Galveston, Texas, there he resides with his family.

Mrs. Nellie Garner Ward, only daughter of Mrs. Eliza Mathews Garner and wife of Mr. Fred Ward of West Point, Ga. (who) died in Griffin, Ga. in October 1905, and was buried in the cemetery at Mount Olive Church in Pike County, Ga. where her mother was buried. (He) left two daughters, Elizabeth and Edna, who are nine and eleven years old. She afterwards married Mr. J. Edward Pittman of North Georgia. She now resides with her husband and two little girls at N. 294 Ormond St., Atlanta, Ga.

2nd, Miss Stella Ward, second daughter of Mrs. Mollie Ward, married Mr. Duff Connelly of Pike County. She is the mother of three sons; Garner, Edward and James. She with her husband and children reside near Molena, Pike County, Ga.

Phil:
I guess since I did not get a response to my
previous reply, you are not interested in the
Mathews/Wright branch of the family. That is
okay but could you still help me, please? :-)
Do you have any more information on the Mathews
family stay in Stewart Co., Georgia and Gray
Rock, Franklin Co., Texas, possibly from your
Mathews Family History manuscript? Was the
manuscript published? If so, can it be purchased?
I have the two volumes of the history of
Stewart Co., GA. Are you interested in any
information on your Mathews from them? I
would be happy to look for you.

I am particularly interested in what prompted the
Mathews and Wright family to leave Stewart Co.
for Gray Rock, Texas. After my great grandfather,
George Washington Wright, III died his wife
and family returned to Stewart Co., GA. Although
my Wright grandmother was born in Texas, my
father was born in Stewart Co.,GA.

I hope you will respond, please. Your help will be
much appreciated. If I can help you in any way, I
would be happy to do so. My email address can
be found in the previous response I posted to
your original message.

Tracing parents or siblings of George Washington Mathews Sr. Supposedly born in Ga. about 1826. Married to Betty Cranford/Crawford (from NC?). Her parents were Elizabeth Johnston(blind granny) and Iasiah Cranford/Crawford who married 11/20/1826. George W. Sr. Betty Cranford/Crawford had 18 children. She died I believe he remarried after moving to Texas. Would be interested in hearing from any of his 18 children's offsprings. Some of the 18 believe to be named: Nora, Maude, Judge, Allie, Donnie Bell, Goldie George Washington Mathews, Jr. (Toge) Reply to jefo@worldnet.net.com

Hi Jackie,

Sent this e-mail to your address - but it came back undeliverable - so here it is:
========================
Are you related to the Mathews? If so, how? Your posting gave me new info on GW Srs wife's name - I had Cranford (from NC) for the last name but no first name and no parents for her -so thanks a ton! I do have a woman named Crawford -also from NC
-as GW Sr's mother's last name.

Hopefully we can help each other. George Washington Mathews Sr was my ggg
grandfather. Here is my line:

?? Mathews (m ?? Crawford)
George Washington Mathews Sr (m. Betty Cranford)
--George Washington Mathews Jr.(m. Martha Jane Heflin- related to actor Van
Heflin)
----Lula Pearl Mathews (3rd wife of James Thomas Derrick) -my great grandparents

In the family history we have, George Washington Mathews Sr along with
several other families came from the AL / MS area by wagon train and arrived
in Wester Junction, Oklahoma around 1893. Then they moved to Texas
(northwestern Tx - Lamar County area) in early 1900's.

Many of the relatives still live in the area. I don't have a lot of info on
these relatives, but do have fairly complete info on George Washington
Mathews Jr - my gg grandfather - a photo plus his kids, etc . Many of the
Mathews' are buried in the McDonald Cemetery in Paris, Lamar Co, Tx.

One of my cousins - I think about a 3rd cousin - has info on George
Washington Mathews Sr - a newspaper article about his pardoned from jail in
1907. He killed someone and his 18 kids and about 50 grandkids got the
Texas Gov. Tom Campbell to release him. The cousin is suppose to be getting
some more info on this.

I would be interested in any additional info you have on ancestry of George
Washington Sr. and/or his wife.

Thanks for the great info you already provided on your posting!

Thanks,
you can reach me at:

Hi Phil, Have you seen the Jerry Mathews Palmer Home page? You have the same Tobias Mathews. I am searching for info on John Mathews m. Nancy ? (family bible says Mathews) 14 May 1784. He died 10 Nov 1842 in Lincoln Co., Ga. Issue:John Presley Mathews, Sally Jarvis Mathews m. Robert Seale, Elizabeth Mathews m. John Benson, Newman Mathews, and Joseph Fenton (bible says Finlay) Mathews, b. 15 July 1797, only son to survive after father's death. Alot of old family papers refer back to Prince William Co., Va. Any connection?

Suzanne,

The Jerry Mathews Palmer Home Page is really great, especially when all the links are working. He has a great deal of information on Archbishop Tobias Mathews.

My Moses Mathews line came to Georgia from South Carolina and settled in Wilkes County soon after the American Revolution. Several descendants later moved to Meriwether County, Georgia. Some of these migrated to Texas before the Civil War and were joined by other members of the Mathews family in the 1860's after the War. In 1874 more members of the family moved to Texas with their Wright in-laws and worked in the stock business as ranchers and cowboys. Many of this last group returned to Georgia in 1887.

Most of my Mathews ancestors are already posted on this and other forums and bulletin boards. I also have them on my Tidwell web site at MyFamily.com and you are welcome to visit and research that material if you wish. I need your e-mail address to register you for the password to logon the site; if you are interested please post your e-mail address and information will be sent to you.

Good luck in your research.

Hi Phil,
Yes, would very much like to see homepage. All info on Moses Mathews never mentions a John Mathews as son, but they are the only two Mathews in Lincoln Co, Ga. in late 1700's and the similarity of the use of Presley, Newman, and Finlay are intriquing. Names of sons in Mathews Family Bible, John Matthews, Fla has copies. Jerry Palmer is in Lexington, Ga. only thirty minutes to Washington or Lincolnton, Ga.
