Surnames: Willis, Stamey, Roper
Am seeking information on Joseph Willis, born c 1753, who was receiving a pension in 1835 in Lincoln County, North Carolina. We believe he was a Private in the NC Militia.

Hoping to prove he was the father of Robert Willis, b c 1796. Information of any type will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much for your help.

Pam

Dear Pam,

I have searched the DAR Patriot Index for your Joseph Willis. I am sad to say I did not find him listed. However, I did find the following Josephs listed

WILLIS, Joseph
Birth: PA Circa 1755
Service Location: PA Rank: Pvt
Spouse: Mary Meldrum

WILLIS, Joseph
Birth: NJ 1759
Service Location: NJ Rank: Pvt
Spouse: Grace X

WILLIS, Joseph
Birth: Circa 1730-35
Service Location: VA Rank: Pvt
Spouse: Hannah X

Not being listed in the Patriot Index means no one has applied for membership using his service record. You could be the first and establish the line for future members!!

Have you searched for wills or probate records in Lincoln Co, North Caroline, remembering these counties were divided and re-divided many times. Have you made a thorough search of all the surrounding counties? Have you ordered a copy of his pension papers? It is surprising what we get from these files. Sometimes they are full of genealogical information and then again sometimes they are not.

Are you interested in joining DAR? If so, please send me your name, address and telephone number and I will forward it to the chapter located nearest to you. Each chapter has a Registrar and a Lineage Chairman. Usually, these two ladies are great genealogists and are willing to help prospective members in their research.

Please let me know if I can help you in any way.

Good Luck,

Sue

I'm not sure which Joseph Willis you are looking for, but the one that died in 1809 in Mercer Co., KY was in the French and Indian War not the Revolution. If you are looking for his son, Joseph who d. in 1818 in Mercer Co., KY he and his brother fought with George Rogers Clark. They were in KY by 1779. They are listed in GEORGE ROGERS CLARK AND HIS MEN MILITARY RECORDS 1778-1784, by Margarey Heberling Harding pulb., by KY Historical Society 1981. The brothers are on p. 56 & 185. Joseph's last name is illegable as well as Wm. B. Rice whoes name is directly above his. John Willis is also on that list but he is indexed as John Willie.

I descend from Joseph Willis' daughter who m. John Hale

I hope this info is helpful.

I am a member of the Joseph Willis family. Many members of this family are buried in St. Peters Cemetay. Having just come from a reunion and having just visited there. I am proud to say that the grave of Joseph Will is there and the inscription on the grave stone is that he fought in the Revolutionary War. This family were members of the second colony established in Farrar Island, Virginia. The government gave them a hugh land grant. Later many members moved to Goochland. They are also members of Thomas Jeffersons family. His aunt Judith is the relative. I would love to become a member of the DAR. Can someone contact me? Many Thanks. Linda

Members must enter the DAR on a direct descendant.
Collateral ancestors may not be used to enter the DAR, to my knowledge.

Hi Lillie,

If you go to the DAR website (www.dar.org) and click on membership, there is a link to request info. Your name and contact info is then sent to your local DAR chapter. They will contact you and forward you all of the paperwork. Good luck!

Yes, I have all of the paperwork but if a direct descendant has already joined on that descendant and the paper work is approved; it makes it much easier. Just trying to find out if anyone has joined on Jospeh Willis?
