Born in Camden County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Currituck County on May 13, 1861. Present or accounted for until the Company was disbanded on or about April 2, 1862. Later served in Company A, 56th Regiment NC Troops (Infantry)
2. Co. A, 56th Regiment NC Troops (Infantry)
Previously served as Private in Company E., 17th regiment NC Troops(1st organization).Enlisted in this company at age 19, on April 25, 1862 for the war. Reported present through April, 1863. Captured at the Battle of Second Gum Swamp on May 22, 1863. sent to New Bern, paroled and sent to City Point, Virginia where he was received on May 28, 1863 for exchange. Returned to duty prior to July 1, 1863. Reported present through February, 1864. Wounded at Ware Bottom Church, Virginia, May 20, 1864. Furloughed on June 13, 1864. returned to duty in September-december, 1864. Captured at Five Forks, Virginia April 1, 1865. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, April 6, 1865; released at Point Lookout on June 26, 1865 after taking the Oath of Allegiance.
