My father(at the tender age of nine) was one of the many child evacuees on this ship, which left England right after the sinking of the City of Benares reported on 23 September 1940. I'm looking for others who were on the ship or whose relatives may have some history or knowledge of experiences on this ship - looking for any memories. Also, I'm interested in tracking down the Samaria ship logs. Anyone have any idea how I can go about that? Thanks so much.

My mother left England on this ship in March 1940 and landed in Halifax after a zig-zag course to evade U-boats. She and her siblings and mother were returning to Canada after living with relatives in England for two years. Her father had sailed ahead to make enough money to get the remainder of the family home to Canada. She said they did run into a bit of bad weather on the way home. Winter in the north Atlantic? I would think so.

I don't know how I missed your response two years ago but I did. I was most interested to hear about your mother. My father died in 2001 and I have been trying to fill in the blanks regarding his history (which he never talked about). But I did find something brief that he had written about a close call on the sail over. Anyway, my apologies for not having responded earlier. Gemma

Robert - thank you so much for this rich information...I was sorry not to have spent more time with my father asking him about this time in his life. All of these tidbits of info have helped me build his story
