Surnames: HOHNKE/OTTO
Hi!
I am researching the HOHNKE/OTTO surname's. My family has different areas listed as to place of origin. Names I seem to end up with are Germany, Posen, West Prussia, and Bavaria. Very confusing! The KILWY side of my family came from Stebbach, Baden. My G-Gramdmother, Otto, (other side of family) was said to be from NURENBERG. Two towns I can't seem to locate are Osefke, West Prussia and Stiftberg, Germany.
I would greatly appreciate any help to sort out these names.

Posen is nowadays Poznan in Poland, West Prussia is also now part of Poland. Nuernberg (u with an umlaut) is generally spelt Nuremberg by English speakers, as in "Nuremberg Trials". There is a Stiftberg in the area of Muenster/Bielefeld which would have been in Prussia in the 19th ccentury,, nowadays in Land NordRhein/Westfalen. 52N, 8E. Perhaps you should recheck the Osefke as a place name. In the old Eastern Provinces, nowadays Poland or Russia, the ending "ke" was very common on family names, as in Hohnke, Schmidtke, not much found in more westerly areas, but not on place names. It sounds to me as though this could be a family name - not a place, which is why you cannot find it.

Surnames: OTTO
Donna,
My OTTO's came here in 1874, I believe. It is said that my g-grandmother was 12 when the family came over from Germany. My g-grandmother was Otilde Otto b. 1862, married August Hohnke. They had thirteen children. She had at least one sister, Anna b. 1865, married Albert Borek. Father: Julius b. 9-6-1832. Mother: Ernestine
missing last name, b. 1831. I found an August and Frederick Otto but haven't been able to confirm they are Julius' siblings. They are ALL from the Leelanau County, Michigan area.
Hope this helps.
