Barbara,

I grew up in Montreal, Quebec. I remember that the only Capper in the phone book that I was not a relative of was a Capper/Jaques. If your relatives were buried in Mont Royal Cemetary, there is a free online site to request information. Hope this helps!

Barbara,

At long last I have found the site for the Mount Royal cemetary. It is mountroyalcem.com. I believe it costs ~ $3.00 for name.
You may have this information already but I have found your Cawthorne Capper listed on the Ellis Island site. The following information was present: Casthorne (spelled wrong) Capper, occupation bank clerk, born Liverpool , age 24 years. He was listed as voyaging on the "Orduna on Feb. 16, 1916 which sailed from Liverpool with a final destination in Montreal, Quebec. Stated he was married and his father was H. Capper from ? Savanesey, Camb. Eng. and he was joining a relative, Uncle ? E. s Jaques at 397 Cote St. Antoine Rd., Westmount, PQ (in Montreal). Hope this helps in locating your family.

Barbara,

As far as I know, the only Capper's in Montreal are my relatives (only 2 families). There are some Cappers listed throughout Canada (not that many ~ 50). I grew up in Montreal and that is when I remember seeing Capper/Jaques in the phone book (probably in the 60's or 70's the listing was there). I think that it was a business listing as I remember Capper and Jaques together. Ancestry.com has a free database of address listings for Canada. If Cawthorne had children, it is very possible that they moved to other parts of Canada or the USA as many moved during the political and language crises in Quebec. Do you know where your Cappers originated? I have traced mine back to the 1700's in Ireland (county Armagh and Down). Before that I do not know but most likely England.
regards, Bev

Hi Bev
Thanks for the information, My Cappers are from London easrly 1800,s they were Chemists. They moved to Liverpool, then to Swavsey then to Canada. Cawthorne had two sisters Jean and Joyce, I am on thier trail in the South of England.I have contacted the Cemetry and I'm awaiting a reply.
When I looked at the Ellis Island site I could not find all the information you did, where did you get it from

Hi Barbara
Joyce Capper was my Grandmother (married Frederick Bullen). Jean Capper her younger sister (married Hugh Snape her second cousin i believe). The uncle E in the earlier posting was Eddie Jaques. Her elder brother she always refered to as Dick lived in montreal. I have a fairly comprehensive family history and photos which Joyce put together late in her life but i would imagine fairly accurate- she had a sharp mind. I will dig this info out for you if you are interested.

Strange name and coincidences happen but I have found the gravestone of Captain Cawthorne Capper [3rd son of Jasper Capper] who died 14 January, 1844 aged 31 years in China. Is there a connection to an earlier Capper ?

Happy to provide details
