Jaremczuk/Yaremzcuk family & Jarema Ancestors

I am having trouble researching the Yaremczuk family of New York because they had a habit of changing their names & kept many family secrets.

Because Yaremczuk, or Jaremczuk, means "Son of Jarema (Jerome)," among other interpretations, I wondered if this family that emigrated from Galicjia to New York, New York between 1908 and 1912, could be related to or once used Jarema as their surnames.

I know the father, Walter or Waclaw, had a wife probably named Francis, or Francizka, who gave birth to a Peter/Patrick (1916), Helen (1921), Josephine (1918), and Frank (1925) before her untimely death in abt 1929. Her maiden name was Gluck.

After the mom's death, the kids were sent to live with different relatives upstate in Paris/Clayville, and in Long Island, and maybe in Deferiet/Carthage. The kids changed their last names to Remchik or married names thereafter as well.

The Remchiks/Yaremczuks/Jaremczuks are somehow related to the Vojciks of Clayville and also the Wojcik-Powells/Powelczuks of Deferiet.

If anyone has any suggestions or connections, the help is greatly appreciated.

I have no records or Walter or Francis; only 2 on Josephine & Frank, and 1 on Peter/Patrick.

Ken(?),

I stumbled upon your message in a Google search this evening, while retrieving the obituary of "Uncle" Frank Remchik, who passed on July 27, 2012. Finding your query inspires me to return to my own geneological interests and pursuits.

I was raised in Deferiet, NY, and knew "Uncle" Frank (not an uncle, really a first cousin twice removed (I think), but called "Uncle" as a matter of respect). As I understand it (and your message already contains part of this information), his Aunt Josephine Remchik (from New York City/Long Island region) married my Great Uncle Lawrence Wojcik (Clayville, NY). As a child he came to live with and was raised by them, alongside their daughter Genevieve Wojcik.

My father Stephen (currently 95 years, still resides just outside Deferiet) is the son of Lawrence Powell (nee Pawelczak) and Josephine Wojcik. Our families would visit each other. "Uncle" Frank and "Aunt" Genny lived as brother and sister, neither ever marrying nor having children. However, "Aunt" Genny repeated the family "tradition" and accepted the ~5 year old child of her Aunt (then residing in Germany) and raised her as if she was her own child.

What I can share at this time is limited to memories, but am willing to share more as discovered. I will appreicate knowing your connection to the "Remchik" family, and how you came to find the Powell connection in Deferiet. I understand that a niece handled Uncle Frank's memorial and interment, and my brother may have contact information. I will try to determine this and share if/when retrieved.

Regards,
Nick Powell (raised in Deferiet, NY, presently residing in San Francisco, CA)
