I received messages from two different cousins and that is terrific. I would like to hear from any Uptegroves, and especially ones who link back to Canada and New York. My earliest known one is Peter Upthegrove in New York in 1850 in the Allegany, New York Census. My e-mail address is joannu@usmo.com

Howdy! I have an Eliza Uptegrove (or Upthegrove) in my family tree. She was my ggg-grandmother, born in 1820 in Canada, married John Henderson in Canada in 1845, the marriage document is very hard to read but it was 'sealed' in Montreal (whatever that means). Eliza and her husband moved to Wisconsin where they both died. His family supposedly had ties to New York before moving to Canada. I am at a dead end with Eliza and don't even know her parents names. If you have any information that could help me out I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Eliza is not a direct ancestor to me, but she was married to my great-uncle Sylvester Thomas Uptegrove. His father was Peter Upthegrove, and his mother was Ann Irish. I believe Sylvester and Eliza (Elizabeth) Kellogg were married approximately 1865. I do have the exact date somewhere, but I need to do some sorting and refiling of my material. Eliza died in NY (I believe near or at Franklinville). I believe she died about 1907. It doesn't sound like the same one, but if you have Upthegrove or Uptegrove in your ancestral lines, there is a very good chance that we are related. I have an Uptegrove site at rootsweb, and if you are interested, let me know, and I will have an invitation sent to you to enter the site. You may answer me at this site, or directly to my e-mail address. I have now found at least four cousins from the NY branchh of Uptegroves, and I am thrilled. Let me know some of the dates you are looking for. If you do not fit into our branch, I believe I may know of someone else who has done a great deal of research on Uptegroves, but I haven't yet found the direct link between us, although I hope to find it when we go further back. At this time, I only go back to appx 1800 on Uptegroves. My ancestors were also born in Canada, and are of Indian descent, either Seneca or Mohawk. Please relpy and we'll see if we can help one another. Joann

Dear Joann, I sent a reply but never heard from you. My Mother is an Upthegrove and her father Robert Alexander Upthegrove came to Florida from So. Carolina after the Civil War I believe. Have not made the connection to So. Carolina yet. Can you send me in the right direction?

My grandfather, Robert Alexander came from South Carolina to Florida after the Civil War. He married Eliza Ann abt. 1915. I believe his father was John William Upthegrove of South Carolina. I believe John William was a mariner, maybe a pilot for the port of Charleston.

Robert, Your message was very interesting to me. I am one of the S.C. Uptegroves. My grandfather was John Edward Uptegrove, a life long mariner and a pilot of the Georgetown,S.C. harbor. I have never seen the name you mentioned so I can't be of any definite help there, but it is very interesting that the names are so similar and the occupation. Perhaps we can help each other. My grandfather was born in S.C. at Peachtree in 1840. His father was William George Uptegrove. We don't know where William George was before the 1830 census when he appears in S.C. Grandfather had a brother William J. L. Uptegrove who was a mariner also. Both of these brothers were active in the naval history of S.C. during the Civil War. The similarity in names perhaps is a coincidence, but one never knows. What else do you know about your fellow?

Thanks for your reply. I was on vacation and just got your message. Can you give me the names of the family of your grand father and their decendants? My GF was Robert Alexander Upthegrove. He had brothers, John and Edward. I Believe their father that came to Florida from S.C. was William.

Robert, yes thank you. My GGrandfather was William G. Uptegrove, place of birth unknown. We have an approximate birth date of 1790-1800. We're not certain what the G. stands for. He first appears in the census in S.C. in 1830. I haven't found him anywhere else. He had 2 sons. William J. L. Uptegrove my guncle and John Edward Uptegrove my gfather. They were born in 1839 and 1840 at Peachtree in S.C. Hope you can help us make the link. We need anything that will lead us to his birthplace and an accurate middle name. He had to be somewhere before 1830 didn't he. Thanks for any assistance. Maybe we can help each other. Melva Prescott
