Vera,
I believe that Sacred Heart is still standing. When the orphanage closed it was turned into a Montessori school, now it is used by the Archdioses of Newark, I'm not sure what the actual use is. The original bldg has been added on to, but I think the main part is the old orphanage.

You might want to check on the records located at Boystown, located on Belgrove Dr in Kearny. They were at one time connected to the Sacred Heart Orphanage.
Good Luck

My father was in an orphanage in the 1930's. We always believed it was St. Cecila however I can find nothing about it. However after reading your letter I was wondering if it wasn't Sacred Heart. Do you know when it began. My father has sinced died and we never asked him much about it and he never talked about it. I know he graduated from St Cecila high school. Any information would help. I know the orphanage was in Kearny, New Jersey. Thank you. Patty

In the mid 1950's I was in an ophanage. I remember the name Sacred Heart Mother Cabrini. It was a long train ride to get there. I think it was near the Hudson River. Can any one tell me if this place is still operating and where it is. I remember a girl my age then, Velva Bell. Patricia Tierney .

Hi,
I spent 8 years at SH from '54 - '62. Graduated in '62 8th grade. I don't recall the name Velli but there are not many names I can remember. The main buildings are still standing.
I returned there twice just to look around. It's a day school now.
Best of Luck.

I am sorry it took so long for me to reply. My dad was in the orphanage in the late 1930s to the early 1940s. When you said the name of the orphanage it rang a bell to me. However when dad was in the orphanage it was a boys orphanage. He graduated from St. Cecila High School and said all of the orphans went there to school. I remember my dad saying the orphanage was closed. Dad never talked about it very much and after he passed we were sorry we didn't ask him more questions about it. Any information you can give me on the it I would appreciate it. Thank you. Patty Harrigan

The Sacred Heart School is still on Highland Ave in Kearny,New Jersey. We once lived on Wilson Ave.In the 50's we would see the orphans playing in the playground right behind our house. It is now a day care center.St Cecilia's School has since closed down.My children went through both the grammer and High Schools. It was interesting reading your remarks about the Sacred Orphanage.

Hello All:
Me and my brother Joe were in Sacred Haert Orphanage for about 10 years we got out in about 1950 and lived in Newaqk N.J, There were about 150 kids there when Mother Elenore and Sister Agnes were in charge.. Would like to hear from any of those boys that were there in SHO. We also had a summer Camp in ( Monroe) Harriman New York with about 5 bungalows...and the Sisters house There was a lage Lake nearby Called Lake Mombasha..
