JERRY EARL HAILE, JR, KILLED IN AUTO ACCIDENT

Jerry Earl Haile, Jr., 17 year old Farmington youth was killed shortly after midnight, Monday, January 25, when the car which he was driving crashed into a rock bluff at Big River bridge near Bonne Terre.

According to the report of the Highway Patrol, the accident occurred about 12:15 a.m. about 2 miles east of Highway 67. He was driving a 1959 Chevrolet, which had been stolen from Bill Hall, while parked in front of his home on Overton street.

Death; according to the officers, was instantaneous. The car was a total loss.

Jerry Earl Haile, Jr., son of Jerry Haile and the late Luvinia Jones Haile, was born in Desloge November 24, 1942 and passed away January 25, 1960, aged 17 years, two months and one day.

He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Janet Brake, of Ste. Genevieve; his foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. Karl Kassabaum, of Farmington; other relatives and friends. He was a former student at Farmington High School.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 27, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Farmington, conducted by the Rev. J. Loren Jolly. Interment in Parkview Cemetery with Miller Funeral service in charge.

Jerry Earl Haile Jr., 17-year-old Farmington youth was killed shortly after midnight, Monday, January 25, when a car which he was driving crashed into a rock bluff at Big River bridge near Bonne Terre.

According to the State Highway Patrol, the accident occurred at 12:15 a.m. 2.2 miles east of Highway 67. Haile was driving a 1959 Chevrolet, which had been stolen from Bill Hall of Farmington. The car had been parked in front of the Hall residence on Foster Street.

Haile had been seen at the rear of a Bonne Terre service station by City Marshal Lawson, who called out to him. Haile jumped into the car and started the vehicle; almost running over Lawson, who had grabbed a gun in an effort to stop the young man. Haile drove out to highway K, with Lawson following in his car, and when they approached Big River bridge, Lawson, knowing there was a sharp curve ahead, slowed down, but Haile kept on, speeding about 90 miles per hour. At the end of the bridge, the stolen car ran into a 30-foot rock bluff. Death was instantaneous, according to the officers. The car was a total loss.
