Question about Passenger Lists

Question about Passenger Lists

Our Italian ancestors traveled back and forth to Italy. I am trying to figure out if the older children were in fact born in america or italy. The father became a citizen in 1891. I see a passenger list in 1897 for the wife and children indicating they were italian. However every census record I have found indicated they were born in the US.

My question is could children be listed on the passenger lists as an alien, even though they were born in America, but the parent was not a citizen?

What paperwork was needed if any to travel? did american children need passports?

I apreciate any help you could give me.

Passports were not required by American Citizens to travel to and from Europe in 1897. The were recomended but again not required in 1915. Passenger manifests were written in the counrty of departure, so the person just may have assumed that the children were Italian born. As far as census records go, the emnumerator did not always speak to the head of household, or the spouse so census information coming from a neighbor or language barrier could have contributed to them being listed as US born. Some italian immigrant lied to census takers out of fear of the government. Do you know where in the US they might have been born to locate birth records? Also do you have a copy of the Naturalization papers, as a spouse and any children would be listed on the paper at the time of naturalization.

I do have the Naturalization papers. However little information is given other than the date they arrived and their address in NY. I guess not much information was required in 1891. In fact, I was hoping to find the town in Italy they were from. It was the reason I ordered it. However, all it says is Italy and not much more than that.

I do know they settled in NY and there are records but there are numerous ones they can be. I guess I need to pull them and start there.

Do you know if Italian immigrants traveled with any documents?

Can you recommend anything I can read on line to better understand how the travelling and immigration process worked? I would appreciate it.

Thanks for your help. Your information was very helpful.

Best Regards.
