I wonder if you know the names of the children of John JR. I have a John Smith (1780-1812) of Rowan Co. NC, who is supposedly from a German line, but his children don't have traditionally German names, making me doubt that nationality. Also his wife is not of a German family. Nothing is known of her in Rowan Co., making me think she came from another NC county. I know there were Bryans in Johnston Co. NC. Here is what I know.

I have been searching for ten years to find the parents of my POLLY (MARY?) BRYAN, b. 1784. She married JOHN SMITH (1780-1812) in Rowan Co., NC in 1804, but no one seems to know anything about her. John Smith was a German of the Schmidt line in Rowan Co., NC. And the names of the children of this marriage have often seemed odd to me, given the fact that John Smith was German (his father was PETER SCHMIDT Jr.). I have also been told that perhaps Polly Bryan might actually have been a Forbis, and that certainly would explain the name of her first child WILEY SMITH. At the early death of John Smith in 1812, Polly remarried another German--Jacob Weant, and they had more children.

At least two of the ancestry charts on www.ancestry.com show the marriage of our John Smith and Polly Bryan (one shows her as Polly O"Brian, b. Ireland but moving to Rowan from New Bern, NC but no source given). I have written to several of the submitters but got no reply on my request for sources. Although I still don't know for sure, I think the names of the children of John and Polly Bryan might be correct (IGI shows their marriage 14 April 1804 and uses the name Bryan). However, maybe she is Irish, especially given the names of the children:
1. Wiley Smith, b. 14 March 1805 (why this name? Was John disowned by his
German family?)
2. Margaret Smith (b. 31 Oct. 1806 - will marry Isaac Earnhart (MY LINE)
3. Peter Smith b.30 Sept 1808
4. Elizabeth Smith, b. 3 Dec 1810
5. Drury Smith, b. 17 Oct 1812 (The name Drew Smith appears in one of the deeds of land sold from the
estate of John Smith in McCubbins file. I know it is connected because it mentions Isaac Earnhart) According to these charts on the internet, the children of Jacob Weant
(25 Dec 1780-8 Nov. 1838) and the re-married (17 Dec. 1814 ) Polly Bryan
Smith on are:
Lucy M. Weant b. abt. 1819
Caroline Weant b. abt 1815
Nancy Catherine Weant b. abt.1817
John B. Weant b.abt.1824
Sarah Ann Agnes Weant b.7 Jan. 1826

In your research have you turned up a Polly (Mary) Forbis who married a Bryan first and then a John Smith?

Jay, I have some Smith ancestors who settled in Purton, Gloucester County, Virginia in the early 1600's. One of his descendants, Thomas Smith, later settled in Johnston County, NC. Could be the same family.

I have some information on the Smith line from Johnston County. We've moved and I'll need to dig it out. One of my lines descends from Rufus Smith (b. ca. 1831 d. 27 Sept 1862 in Richmond, VA during Civil War) of Wake County(near edge of Johnston) who died in the Civil War. He had a son John born ca.1852. I do not know of his descendents as I descend from his brother Lorenzo. Rufus' land in Wake County was lost because he mortgaged it before he left for Civil War and the wife Margaret(b. ca. 1827) moved after he died.

Jay - I think the James Smith, son of John Smith Jr., was born about 1790 in now Hawkins Co TN. His mother, was the former Sarah Bailey of Sumner Co. After John Jr's death the mother married Micajah Lee and had two more children. James is mentioned as one of the heirs of John Smith Sr of Jefferson Co in a deed 1795. Those heirs were Samuel, John, Gideon, Britton, James and William. The only way I can fit those heirs into the known information is that Samuel was John Sr's son and administrator, John was his grandson by his son Alexander, and Gideon, Britton, James and William were grandsons by his son, John Jr.

James Smith sold his portion of his inherited land and his mother's dower to Micajah Lee December 1812. James's half-brothers, Gideon, Britton and William sold their portions to Micajah in Dec. 1800.

I got real excited when I saw familiar names, but the further I read it sounds like it probably isn't a match. But just in case, I'll share my family info.

My 3rd-great grandfather was Wiley B. Smith, born ca 1810 in NC or TN. Family legend says that his father fought during the War of 1812 died on the way home from the Battle of New Orleans (1815). We don't know this father's name.

Wiley B. Smith married Isabella Catherine Jones in Davidson Co., TN in 1836. They later moved to Memphis and finally to Texas.

Children:
Henry, b. ca 1837 in TN
Martha Elizabeth, b. 6 Dec 1838 in TN
William, b. ca 1840 in TN
James, b. ca 1842 in TN
Emma, b. Oct 1844 in TN
Wiley B., b. ca 1845-46 in TN
John Cuthbert (or Clemmons), b. 13 Jul 1847 in Nashville, Davidson Co., TN
George Washington W. (Wilson?), b. Jan 1850 in TN

I also know for a FACT that Wiley B. Smith is related to the prominent Smith family of Smithfield, Johnston Co., NC that you were asking about. I know this from DNA tests.
