Does anyone know the names of the brothers of the Captain. My aunt has stated in the past that she had an uncle that was a captain of a ship that burned and went down in the Harbor, etc. Her grandmother was Jenny Van Schaick (born 1850) Troy, New York. On her death certificate if states father J. Van Schaick - Troy, NY.

Capt. William Henry VanSchaick was the Captain of the General
Slocum that burned off Hell's Gate and about 1200 people were lost. His father was Jacob VanSchaick, also a boat Captain.
I have some other family data. Contact me at my e-mail address.

I am not sure if my family connects to this Van Schaick line. I know that I am connected through the several VAn Schaick marriages to the Bogardus family from the Albany area. I am researching this captain Van Schaick to see if he connects to my lines. Do you have any info. back beyond his father? FYI- William's son (same name) was also a captain of a steamboat in NYC harbor between the turn of the century and the 1930's.

Capt. Wm. H. Van Schaick ( General Slocum) was the son of Jacob VanSchaick and Mary Jane Berry. Jacob was a boat Capt. My wife's gggrandfather was Cornelius Van Schaick, brother of Jacob and also a boat Capt.out of Troy. Their parents were William VanSchaick and Eunice Van Buren. William VanSchaick's father was Jacob Johannes Van Schaick, who was married to Maritje Van Buren. I have not verified Jacob Johannes and Maritje Van Buren. This was given to me by a great grandniece of Capt. William (General Slocum).

Do you have anymore on the Capt. William that you mentioned in you note?

Hi Steph-
I have been told that the Captain had a brother Cornelius, who was also a captain at Troy. This part of the line has not been very well documented, so anything you would care to share, I would appreciate. Do you know if your line includes either Van Buren or Berry families? Do you have a name for Jenny Van Schaick's mother?

Hi Karen. I have just started researching Jennie's Line. Other than what my Aunt mentioned I have very little. Jennie married a Robert Gregg and had four sons and moved to Chicago.Jennie's death certificate lists mother unknown. Supposedly, Jennie was a singer in Troy.

I know this query is years and years old, but I've just started entering all of our family data into the online database. If you are still around I would like to connect with you because Mary Jane Van Schaick who's brother is William Van Schaick of the General Slocum, is my grandfather's grandmother and not the Gregg family.

Hello!
I know I am replying to an old thread but your information connects me also. My great-great-grandfather was Garrett Van Schaick. His brothers were Jacob and Cornelius. We have William & Eunice (Van Buren) Van Schaick as common ancestors.
I've read about the horrible tragedy of the boat fire and sinking with Capt. William Van Schaick being responsible. Had no idea he was related to Garrett (his nephew.) Garrett Van Schaick died around 1905 in Ohio, so he wasn't in the Troy/Albany area when that happened.
I am trying to verify our Dutch ancestors back to the 1600s. If you have any information, please contact me via email: diana@alwaysinspired.com
