Ellis Island 1897 fire

Ellis Island 1897 fire

Has there ever been an attempt to determine exactly what quantity of immigration records was lost in the Ellis Island fire of June 15, 1897?

I've always seen vague references to "many records" being destroyed. Has anyone ever attempted to determine what percentage of the pre-1897 ship manifests were lost? There doesn't seem to be any obvious break (i.e., missing years) in the Ellis Island or Castle Garden manifests, unless I'm mistaken.

thanks

No ship records were destroyed since they were kept at the Customs House, but all other administrative records for 1855-1890 were lost.

Thank you, Robert, for your helpful reply. I'm glad none of the ship records perished, although the administrative ones are certainly a loss to historians.
