John Bentley moved to Brazil, during or after the civil. I have found him listed as having died and was buried in Brazil through the SCV Org. He left a wife in the USA, but she never joined him. But a Mrs. John Bentley is listed also in the records of the SCV Org. as having died or lived a long life in Brazil. The family may be another family that he had in Brazil. This is my 2nd. great grandfather. I am very interested in finding him or how to search for him in Brazil.

I have found some information on John Bentley, thanks to the help of several people. If anyone else can add more please contact. So far I have found that John Bentley was married to a woman in Brazil named Sophia or Sofia Grady.
She had a sister named Mary E. Grady that married a Rev. Emerson. There are listed along with John Bentley,(sons I
assume) John Jr., William, and George. They all lived in the state of Sao Paulo. He was probably still alive in 1906.
My thanks to Thomas Steagall, Daniel Carr De Muzio,Betty A. Oliveira and the U.S. State Dept. in Brazil.
I hope that I may one day do a service for these friends as meaningful to them as what they have done for me. This is an answer to many generations that questioned what had become of John Bentley, my great great grandfather.
Many thanks

There is a book, written by the descendant of one of tbe Brazilian confederados called "The Lost Colony of the Confederacy". I don't recall the author, but it is availalble in a number of public libraries. It is written in English.

Sophie Grady, born in North Carolina in 1841, was one of the five children of Durham Grady and Jane Brown Calcoat Grady. The family group that emigrated in 1867, apparently under the leadership of Presbyterian minister William Emerson, consisted:

Sophie's widowed mother Jane (1811-c1900) with her five children:

Mary Elizabeth Grady (1840-1910, married to Emerson in 1863)
Sophie Grady (1841-??, later married John Bentley)
Jane (1843-19xx, never married)
Curtis Durham (1845-19xx)
Martha Hannah Grady (1849-??)
plus
William Emerson with six or seven children from his first marriage to Elizabeth Bingham (died 1862) and three with Mary Grady
plus Curtis's wife Sarah Rush Grady and their first three children Harriet, Suzana and Sophia,
so about 20 in all.

Curtis and Sarah were my wife's great grandparents, through their seventh child Mary Elizabeth, born c1881.
