Hello,
I am researching my ancestors who settled in Caledonia, Racine WI. in 1852. Nikulas DANEK came with his wife Marie (JILEK) DANEK and their seven children. Frantisek Danek married Rosalie PORTELE, John H. Danek married
Anna KUTINA, Anna Danek married Frank KUBIK, Joseph Danek married Ann BURESS, Mary Danek married Wencle KLOFANDA, Katherine Danek married Anton DOVRAICK and Sophie Danek married Frank SMERCHECK. Some of my ancestors moved on to Minnesota in 1870. Joseph Danek, Mary Klofanda and Sophie Smerchek stayed in Racine WI. (to the best of my knowledge). I would like to hear from anyone who is also researching the above mentioned families or anyone who has any information about the above listed families.
Thank You, Kathy Hertzog

Rudolph Klofanda is my great grand father. He lived in Caldonia and Racine. I am interested in where and when he entered the United States as well as his home of origin in Bohemia. He was married two times the second wife was Celia Nehoda (I think). He had 8 children. His mother's nsme was Katherine.

When was the Bohemian National Cemetery in Racine County established? I'm searching for any information on the death of John Kudej in about 1867. He and his family arrived in the USA from Bohemia in about 1866. His family, listed in the 1880 census, apparently lived on a farm near Rochester. His widow's maiden name was Mary Vondrasek and I believe her family may also have lived and died in the Rochester area. Perhaps there is a burial record for Kudej or Vondrasek ?

Kathy ~

You mentioned you were researching the Danek, Klofanda and Smerchek surnames of Racine County. Have you seen the NICHOLAS DANEK entry in THE GRASSROOTS HISTORY OF RACINE, a beautiful book put out in 1978 by the Racine County Historical Museum Library? If not, that entry (pg. 388-389) has fabulous photographs, including a lovely one of the old homestead of Danek family patriarch, Nicholas, and of Joseph Danek and his family (Joseph, b. 1839, the brother of Mary Danek Klofanda and Sofie Danek Smercek).

If you do not have it, and if you don't live in the Racine area, I could try scanning it on my computer for you (can't promise how the photos would come out).

Best,
Kathe C.

Hi Julie ~

Although I'm not related to either the Danek or the Smrcek families, I did take a look in the GRASSROOTS HISTORY OF RACINE CO. (WI) for you. It does, I see, include nice photos of some of your Smrcek relations. You must be descended, then, from Pavel and Anna Smrcek's son Pavel of Marshall Co., KS (later Riley Co.). They all started off, when they came from Czechoslovakia, in Caledonia, Racine Co., WI and your Pavel, Jr., headed the later move to KS. His brother Frank (Sophie Danek's husband) had two sons, Daniel and Frank Jr., that both lived much of their lives in Kansas also.

The photos in the GRASSROOTS book are of Sophie and Frank Smrcek Sr., and one of Sophie and Frank's sons, and pictures of Emily and Joseph Smrcek, who was the son of Frank and your Pavel's brother Joseph.

As far as information on the families of all these people, you can find them all outlined on the Latter-Day Saints website. "Cut & paste" the following web to get to the LDS search page:

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?P...

(If you have any problem getting to it, go to www.familysearch.org and then click on "Search Ancestors." It'll take you to the search page). Once there, be sure that "All Resources" is highlighted on the left column. Enter FRANK SMRCEK in the name slots and click to Search. The "Ancestral Files" section will include Frank Smrcek, born in November 1845. Click on his name to open. You can then click on any of the names (AND on the "Family" link directly to the right of the names) and you'll end up seeing all children, parents, etc., going back and forward with each generation.

If you'd like copies of the photos I mentioned, email back and I'll scan them into the computer.

Let me know if these things work out for you, Julie.

Best,
Kathe C.

I have marriage license from Feb. 15, 1905 Racine that wed Anton HLENOSKY and Fannie JIRUCH. Anton's father given as Jospeh HLENOSKY and mother as Barbara BLANK, both from Praha Bohemia. Fannie's father given as Frank SMERCHECK and mother as Annonette SMERCHECK, both from Cedar Rapids IA.

I have not found them on any census or anything else. I am researching Anton HLINOVSKY, b. 1880 ND and wonder if this could be an alternate spelling of him before marrying Anna CERNY, b. 1888 CZ? There are SMERCEKs in Caledonia area. Any help with this Anton HLENOSKY greatly appreciated. Thanks.
