My great grandfther John Binnie, wife Elizabeth Gardner, married in Glasgow in 1860, the same year they emigrated to New Zealand. His parents were Alexander Binnie and Janet (nee Martin). His wife's parents were William Gardner and Jane (nee McArthur) from Milngarvie. Does anyone know of John's family and if he had any brothers or sisters?

We may be part of the same family. My gggrandfather was john binnie who married Margaret Ballantine in Carnwath and Carluke (both Lanarkshire) the same day, july 1, 1842. Their daughter was Jane Gardner Binnie born January 1847. The Gardner bit drew my attention. Margaret later died and John remarried an Isobel Purves in Edinburgh. John was something to do with the railways. Other children of first marriage were Mary (1845) Ann (1848) and helen (1850). can anyone place these?

Arthur, thank you for your enquiry. Sorry I have not replied to your earlier response but will write a letter shortly to you with information on the Binnies in New Zealand. My greatgrandparents came to New Zealand in 1860 and settled in Sefton, North Canterbury. Whether any other of his family came out I do not know but there is a family in Dunedin and there are some more recent arrivals in Christchurch.

Will be in touch shortly,
