I am a descendant of David Morgan Burford of Smith County, Tennessee. He had a brother, John M. Burford, but we know very little about him. He and David were children of Rev. Daniel Burford and Elizabeth Hawkins. I note that one of yoyr John Burford's children was named Fannie Hawkins. That was the name of Rev. Daniel Burford's first wife. She and his second wife Elizabeth (my gg-grandmother) were sisters.

What time frame was your Daniel and Fannie? The John I mention was a John P b: 10-14-1825. This John married my Frances Clark who was b: 3-19-1835. Could this John could have possibly been a grandson of your Daniel Fannie or Elizabeth? As you may have noted there was a John a David DANIEL as well, so the names have definately been passed down. I do not know who my John's parents were. There is a lady I have been corresponding with who is from the Burford line. Can't remember right off hand which child she is from. Maybe my John is the son of your elusive John....

We do not have the exact date of Rev. Daniel Burford's birth or death, or location of his burial. We believe his first wife, Fannie Hawkins died about 1780. From existing correspondence, we know that his second wife, Elizabeth was extremely ill in 1820; apparently near death. Therefore, it appears that your John was not Daniel's son. One of Daniel's sons, Daniel Hawkins Burford, died in 1816, so could not have been your John's father. Another son, Benjamin W. Burford, b. 1775 had a son, Daniel Burford, b. 1806, so he could have possibly been your John's father. Keep looking......

Linda-
Sorry, I have two Mary Ann Burfords in my family; both were daughters of David Morgan Burford, my great-grandfather. The first Mary Ann was born in 1830 and died in 1834. Mary Ann II was born in 1835 and died in 1916. She was married to Col. John K. Howard, CSA. a Martha Ann Burford, daughter of Maj. John Hawkins Burford and Nancy McCollester, was born in 1817. She was married to William Alfred Corley.

Just came across your response to me from some time back. I was looking for a John P. Burford and wife Frances Clark.
I believe you can find lots of your Burford deaths on the Smith Co Tennessee page. They have most of their cemeteries on line now WITH PHOTOS! There were several Burfords on there.

I just now saw your post of 2001. I have been searching out my GGGGrandfather, Morgan LaFayette Alexander, brn 1825. All indications are that he was from TN. Married and children are found there. I have no parents for him. There is a lot of circumstantial evidence that he may have been an illegitimate child of Elizabeth Watkins Alexander and David Morgan Burford. Not just the name and birth date, (6 mos. before their marriage). Elizabeth's grandmother was Mary Brandon and Morgan LaFayette's first born was named John Brandon. Alexander. David Morgan Burford's brother was Benjamin Wyatt Burford and Morgan LaFayette named his sixth child Benjamin. With all of these conections I am very curious, and not being able to find any more info. on Morgan. It appears that Elizabeth was 17 years old when she married David Morgan Burford and he was 34. Could it be that Morgan was born out of wedlock and at that time it was improper to name the child after the father so maybe she gave Morgan her family name? What do you think? Or am I reaching?
