I have to go back at least 10 generations for a class project, and on my moms side I have only gone back 3 and I can't find anything online.

The information I have is that my grandfather, Walter Gregorek died in 1998. He was born in Avoca, and the son of William and Stella Korncavage Gregorek. He was a graduate of Duryea High school. He was a retired steel worker and a WW2 Army veteran as part of Merrill’s Marauders, 5307 composite unit.

Any information at all would be greatly appreciated.

Hello. I know that anyone else with the last name of Korncavage, has to be some type of relative. My name is Tina Korncavage and I am not aware of the last name Gregorek, but my father David, may know something. Please let me know if you have specific questions that I may be able to answer!

Thanks,
Tina

My father's name is also walter and he's 84. Originally, I believe our grandfathers name was grezgorzek when he came over from poland in the early 1900's. My father dropped both "z's" and his uncle dropped 1 to wind up gregorzek...and i have no clue as to why either did what they did

good luck in your quest

I stumbled upon this site quite by accident, when searching for my father, Edward Korncavage (Korney). His family was from Duryea, Pa. I don't recall a Stella. There definitely was an Eva, who died in the 1980's or 1990's, in Buffalo, NY. Avoca is the next town over from Duryea. Both my parents graduated from Duryea HS. My father was a WWII vet as well as many of his brothers; Edward was on the USS Bennion, a Navy Destroyer. I just returned from Duryea a couple days ago; the cemetary on Church Street is where much of the Korncavage family is buried, however the original name on the gravestone is KORONKIEWIECZ or something similar. I know this for a fact, as the "Korncavage" homestead is right across the street from the cemetary; the stone marks my grandparents, and I believe at least 1 or 2 uncles.

I don't know if there were any other Korncavage families in Duryea or Avoca at that time, or if there are any Korncavage families that ARE NOT related; I would also tend to assume that all the Korncavage families in that area are related. I remember the area is very "close-knit" as I was in the VFW post in Duryea since I was a baby, and everyone new each other; through much of my life, I've spent time in Duryea with relatives and have been in & out of that same VFW Post, only allowed in because of my name or who I was related to, so I think the family name is recognized as just one family in that area, albeit many brothers. My mother is still alive out here, but for a timeline to place the generation, my parents were born in the 20's, and my father was the youngest of all the brothers. He died in the late 1980's when he was in his mid 60's.

If this is the same family, much of it has moved to the Buffalo, NY area. My cousin remains on Church St in Duryea. I also have uncles in Johnson City (Binghamton NY area) and NJ, but for the most part, 4 of the brothers headed to Buffalo in the late 40's-50's, and the family name has again been shortened or changed.

Sorry all this is a little late for a class project, but maybe it will help someone else. Maybe Koronkiewiecz or however it's spelled is why you couldn't go back any further in the family tree.

Mark

Hi, I am not sure if this will help you or not. I maintain the Duryea, PA website at www.duryeapa.com and after only being online since Feb. 2007 we already have almost 3,000 old pictures and other items regarding Duryea and the people who lived there. We already have over 21,000 hits so it has been very popular so far.

There are all kinds of items there including many school, church and other group photos that might list some of your ancestors.

If you get a chance, you may want to check it out. If you have anything you want to share with the visitors, we would be very happy to include it.

I am also considering putting up a forum where visitors who are searching for ancestors, etc. can talk to other visitors who may be able to help them. That is not available yet but something I am working on.

Take care and good luck with your research.

I saw your post about having relatives ( Korncavage)in Johnson City. My grandfather's sister's name was Wanda. Does this name fit with your relatives?
Thanks,
Susan
