Anything more you can tell us? Children? Sibs? Birth, marriage, death dates? Even aproximate dates can sometimes be helpful. The name "van der Yssel" in Dutch is usually "van der Ijssel" Johan could be short for Johannes.

Marianne,

Thank you ever so much for your reply - you have been a great help! I have now been able to trace back a reasonable way on both the van den Ijssel and Olie sides.

I am now at a bit of a brick wall on the van den Ijssel side though. I got back to Johannes b.1849, son of Johannes van den Ijssel and Maria Geertruida Jonas. However, I shall keep trying and see if I manage to get a breakthrough!

I have been trying to look into the family for a friend but have been completely stuck - now I can see her tomorrow and give her the surprise! Thank you once again.

Kind regards,
Luke.

Marianne,

Thanks once again for your help, it is very much appreciated. That certainly take that branch of the family back quite a way! Also, thank you for the links - now I have managed to fill in information for siblings and deaths etc.

On a different note. I am trying to find information for brothers of the Van Den Ijssel family who perished on the Eastern Front in the Second World War. They were apparently buried in Leningrad. Do you know where I may be able to find such information, as I dont know where to start?

Kind regards,
Luke.

Luke,

It would be nice to know a little bit more, like: full names, in which army were they serving, what was their residence, etc?

Kin regards,
Marianne

Marianne,

I will try to get some more information for you next week, as I don't really know anything more at the moment. I think there were quite a few brothers who were killed.

Are there census records available for the Netherlands, as there are for the UK? Now I have the structure of the tree, I'd really love to dig a bit deeper and learn a bit more.

Thanks for all your help. Kind regards,
Luke.

Hello I have just discovered a message you sent to a student of mine who was researching my family tree The Van den Ijssel's .Johannes and Adriana were my grandparents my mother was elizabeth who moved to Holland. But this is only the start of the story we think and I have taken over the search myself now. If you could find out anything about my many missing relatives I would be very grateful or at least get in touch. Many thanks Rosita

Rosita, for living relatives in the Netherlands try the phonebook. There are more then 280 hits on Vijver vd in the Netherlands. They might also be van de Vijver.
Looking for birthes after 1902 is not possible. For some areas the census like bevolkingsregister is open till 1939. Deathes can be found till 1962 and marriages till 1932.
