My neighbour asked me to post this. In November 1993, 'The Scots Magazine' (The world's oldest popular periodical, first published 1793) gave the origins of the surname Cunnison. The name means Conan's son. Conan was the illegitimate offspring of Henry, the last Celtic Earl of Atholl in the 13th century. Amongst many interesting facts given was that a John Cunnison of Balnacree was a subaltern of the Atholl regiment in the Highland uprising of 1715. The name was recorded as prevelent in Perthshire Scotland in the 15th to 17th century by Stewart of Garth in his 'Sketches of the highlanders' but is scarce nowadays. The barony of Edradour was held by Cunnisons between 1474 and 1595. My Great Grandfather, John Cunnison came from the Blairgowrie area of Perthshire and settled in Edinburgh where my Grandfather was born, as was I. There you have the origins of the name but to trace back is a long and tedious business. The name Cunnison is traceable to 22 parishes in Perthshire and many Cunnisons are recorded in the Mormon records in the USA. Fort Wayne, Allen, Indiana and Riverside California are places where Cunnison can be traced at this present date. There were a total of 62 Cunnisons in the 1881 British Census, resident in Scotland and 7 Cuunisons in England.

My Grandmother's maiden name was Clara Bell Cunnison. Her Father was Robrt Cunnison and her mother was Matilda Beck. I find so much on James Cunnison, brother to Robert Cunnison but want to know more about my Grandmother's family. I especially want to know about George Cunnison, her brother who was born on the 28, July 1886. I think he was the Sunday School Superintendant at Prairie Grove, a little church in Ft. Wayne. He later moved to Texas with his wife Ruth Cunnison and then I think to California. Can you tell me anything about this part of the family. Pat Mans

As a child (twin) I often heard the name "Granny Whetten" who was the mother of James Cunnison - my great-grandfather. All were located on various farms in Allen Co. Indiana. James is the father of Frank Cunnison, my grandfather. Frank is the father of Glenn Cunnison, my father. Frank married Florence Mason and moved to Riverside, California where they raised sons Glenn and Dale and a daughter Edna. Could be a link to your research. Would be interested in your reply.

Message for your neighbour George Cunnison:

My grandfather was a James Cunnison, who came from long line of 'James Cunnisons'. We have traced our Cunnisons ancestors back to the Edradour/Moulin area. After leaving Moulin they then lived in the Blairgowrie, Clunie, Caputh, Kirton of Lethendy area too - so I am wondering if we are related to George. There was definitely a brother John at some point.
As for the American Cunnisons we would be interested to know if you guys know who was the first Cunnison émigré from Scotland.

I've recently been doing research on the Cunnisons of Blairgowrie, Scotland and have found out quite a lot. I am in the process of writing it all into a personal log which I aim to have finished by mid-November.

If anyone is interested in this, please get in touch.

The George Cunnison who posted in 2000 is actually my cousin but we haven't seen each other for years. I believe he lives in England now. I live in Berlin, Germany.

Best wishes to all Cunnisons
from Isobel (daughter of Bertha Cunnison)

Looking for information on Elizabeth Cunnison born 1868. Not sure of who her husband was. She had 4 children - John born 1892, Isabella (Hulme) (my lineage) born 1893, Thomas born 1897, Mary born 1899.

Can't find any information past Elizabeth. Not even her husband.
