Dear Listers, I am desperately trying to find records or information on the Cumberland County Militia during the Revolutionary War. My ancestor, Robert WEIR(E) Born : 1752, Ireland. Died: 1823, Westmoreland County, PA. Married: Margaret GORDON and Margaret CAMPBELL. The History of Indiana County, PA states that Robert fought in the Revolution for the Cumberland County Militia. How do I document the Militia? Where are the Muster Rolls (or anything)? I can't document either of his marriages - what Presbyterian Churches were in existence and are records available from 1773 -1790? Are there Tax Records? any information would be helpful and greatly appreciated. Thank you, Alisa

Some tax lists and *probably* militia rosters would have been published in the 3rd Series of the published "Pennsylvania Archives". Other items concerning Cumberland Co. may appear in correspondence published in the 1st Series of the published "Pennsylvania Archives" (editor for most of the series was Egle).

Also if you'll locate the web site of the (governmental organization) Pennsylvania Archives in Harrisburg, there are links to very lengthy lists of its holdings concerning the various Counties: tax lists, land surveys, militia lists, etc. These lists note what was published in the above **published** "Pennsylvania Archives", by series, volume and pages' numbers. This will enable you to request the right volume(s) via inter-library loan, if you are not near a city that has a library that already has the very extensive published series. Inter-library loan costs a few dollars per volume for a book you can look at over the course usually of 2 weeks. Since these volumes are now over 100 years old, you probably will not be permitted to take one home. Be sure to ask to borrow the *index* book(s) for the series you're looking for! For the 3rd Series it's in 3 volumes.

You have to also go the the ARIAS site, which presently has photocopies of the information cards the PHMC (Penn Hist Museum Comm) has for all of their Revolutionary service. Robert Weir appears on http://www.digitalarchives.state.pa.us/archive.asp?view=Arch... , but the general address is http://www.digitalarchives.state.pa.us/ . The State is paying to have these converted, might as well use them.

Note that the militia roster item in the card file is for a Robert Weir of Washington Co., PA. All men aged 16-60 were supposed to be in the County Militia. If the inquirer seeks this information in order to qualify for membership in an organization such as SAR or DAR, evidence of active duty or an active act of patriotism is required. The data on this particular card does not supply that evidence.

This may or may not be the individual you were looking for; you'd have to prove it one way or another.

Study of the history of formation of Pennsylvania counties will help you pinpoint where to look.
