Staggs from KY to OH to IN

Surnames: Staggs
I have been trying to untangle my Stagg line for some years. I desc from a Mary Polly Staggs who married William McGlone in Mason Co KY 1805. I believe Mary Polly was the dau of a James Staggs, and sister to Elijah and Athol Staggs. Mary Polly and her husband, along w/Elijah and Athol ended up in Vigo Co IN by 1820.

In trying to untangle this line, I have accumulated some Staggs info that appears to be connected. It appears that several Staggs families, probably related in someway, were in Mason/Flemming Co KY by the late 1790's. Sometime around 1805 or so, some of these families moved to Wayne twp, Butler Co OH. Some of the families remained in Mason and Fleming Co's. After about 10 years or so, the families in OH seem to split up. Some stayed in Butler Co, then moved on to Hamilton Co OH. Some moved to Franklin Co IN, Rush Co IN, Delaware Co IN, Vigo Co IN, Parke Co IN, and Clay Co IN.

Here is the info that I have accumulated. I post it in the hope that someone out there can use it, and perhaps help me get beyond my Mary Polly Staggs' father James.

5] Slaves.

I have seen references to his being from NC/SC, and there is a William Stagg in the first Census in SC. There is also a William Staggs listed in the DAR bc 1750 (Vol 166 pg 213). However, there is no indication that this is the same individual who died in 1815 in Butler Co OH.

It is in splendid working order and great interest is manifested in the objects of the society by all the members. It has done a great deal of good among the resident and sojourning brethren in relieving cases of distress among them, every member acting manfully up to his obligation in this matter. This is one of the finest lodges in the county, and under its present efficient officers is still progressing. The officers are: N G, Paul Romas; V G, Elijah Staggs; secretary, J P Fowler; treasurer, H W Smith.

STAGGS Sargent Perry 1894
SARGENT STAGGS.-Having accomplished a satisfactory work as an agriculturist, acquiring a competency on which to live during his declining years, Sargent Staggs is now living retired from active pur- suits in Cory, enjoying to the utmost the well-merited reward of his long- continued, unremitting toil. Coming from pioneer stock, he was born, October 23, 1835, in Riley township, Vigo county, a son of Athel Staggs. Born in Ohio in 1812, Athel Staggs came with his parents to Indiana when he was about twelve years old, and was brought up in Sullivan county, which was then in its original wildness. After his marriage he removed to Riley township, Vigo county, being one of the early settlers of the place. Buying a tract of timbered land, he built the log cabin in which his son Sargent was born. When the Erie and Wabash canal was begun he was employed on its construction, and at the same time his mother boarded a part of the employees. In 1840 he traded his Riley township property for land in sections 29 and 32, Perry township, Clay county, that in section 29 being covered with timber, while the other was prairie. A log house and a few acres cleared constituted the sole im- provements that had been previously made. He at once began clearing the land and breaking the prairie, and as the years passed by succeeded in placing the larger part of the land in a good state of cultivation. He replaced the log buildings with substantial frame structures, and there resided until his death, at the age of sixty-four years. He married Sarah Harris, a daughter of Benjamin Harris, who moved from Ohio to Indiana, becoming a pioneer of Sullivan county. She survived her husband for a long time, attaining the venerable age of eighty-one years. She reared six children, namely: Newport, Sargent, Sarah J., Elijah, Tyra J. and Annie. But five years old when his parents settled in Perry township, Sargent Staggs has been a witness of almost the entire growth and development of this part of the county. At that time deer were very plentiful, and his father, an expert marksman, killed many of them, and Mr. Staggs, himself, killed four, shooting the last one from his own door- yard in 1859. His father kept sheep and raised flax for many years, and his mother, an adept in domestic arts, used to card, spin and weave the homespun in which she made garments for the family, the clothes and food of the household being produced on the farm. Sargent Staggs attended the pioneer schools as a boy and youth, in the meantime becom

I also have Staggs from Ky to OH. From the 1850 census in Fleming Co. I have James and Tabitha. They were in Ky until sometime between 1860 and 1870. They show up in Adams Co. OH. One of their children was Cynthia, who was born in 1852.There was also a James, William, Susan, Mary a possible Matilda, a possible Sarah All born from about 1845. Not sure if I can be of any help, but thought since it seems they were in Fleming Co about the same time there could be some connection.

I was looking for information on a Elijah Walton Staggs, who lived around the late 1800's in Okahoma/Texas. He married a Dora (Dorothy?) Rutledge. In 1900 they had a son Oscar Denis Staggs, born in Asher, Pottawttomie, OK.
Is this any relations to your Elijah Staggs?

After many hours of pouring over census and land purchases, I have come to this conclusion.
I beleive that Abraham was also father to John born 1796, Fleming Co, Kentucky; Benjamin, born 1805, Kentucky; Noah 1810, born Fleming Co, Kentucky.
Then Abraham moved for a short time to Ohio where Samuel was born 1813.
John moved to Indiana in 1822, purchased land on November 13, 1822.
John then purchsed land again in Parke Co on Feb 8, 1831.
Abraham married his second wife Catherine Garner Dec 11, 1824 in Vigo Co, Indiana.
Cannot find Abraham in the 1830 Census, the 3 children listed with Catherine in the 1860 census has them born in Missouri, did they move to Missouri then back to Indiana by 1837.
Abraham purchased land in Parke Co, on Mar 20, 1837. Abraham, Samuel and Noah all purchased Land in Parke Co, on the same day with adjoining property on Sept 10 1838.
Fielding Purchased land in Parke Co April 1, 1848.
John purchased 3 tracks of adjoining land on the same date April 1, 1848.
Noah (pg 1)and Benjamin (pg 5) are list on the same Census for 1830 in Sullivan, Indiana.
In 1840 Noah has moved to Missouri.
1840 Parke Co Census, John, Samuel, Fielding are all Listed on the same page (127) in Parke County.
Abraham dies before 1850.
Catherine is listed in the 1860 Parke County, Union Twsp.Census Abraham and Catherine had 3 more children,Elizabeth, 1830, James, 1836 and Amanda, 1839. She was also living with her son Henry Garner.

Hello,
It might seem we have the same people in our family at one time too. I have been looking up where the fmaily came from, and I would love to compare notes. since we have some of the same kin, and I know it will split somewhere.

Looking forward to hearing from you!!!
