If anyone has any information on the Cara family in these regions (further info below) pls get in touch.

Cornwall/Italy:
Our family descends from Italy and after moving to Cornwall were involved in the pilchard pressing and dyeing industry (settling in Chapel St, Penzance, Cornwall, UK in late 1880s)
I am very keen to trace the link back to Italy.

Melbourne:
I am also trying to track down my cousin Richard (Dick) Cara from Cornwall, England and who later lived in Rangoon and then Melbourne, Australia. The only other information I have is that Richard had 3 children.
Thanks in advance!

Hi Peggy,
It is possible to trace the Cara family in Chapel St. back (at least) to the 1841 Census. The Censuses show a Stephen Cara, Silk Dyer, born ca 1800. So did you mean they came from Italy in the late 1780s (not 1880s)? What evidence do you have?
Regards,
Mike

II know it's been a long time since you were contacted, but I am a Cara by maraige I have two daughters who will not carry on the name. I have always been interested in our family name because it means so many different things in different cultures. In Ireland it means friend, Italy it means dear and Spanish it means face I live in the UK and my husband's aunt has traced the family tree back to the 1500's
It's a shot in the dark but through family I was told there are onl 80 Cara's left in the world. It would be nice to hear from others.

Hi there...I was searching my name on google and came across your post. I'm descended from the Cara's in Penzance. The story my grandfather gave me was that all of the first-born son's were named Stephen and that the family fled from Portugal during the Spanish Inquisition and settled in Penzance (Redruth)...seemed to make sense considering my Great-Grandfather was Stephen (lived in Southern Ontario, fought in the Boer war and was a police officer) my Grandfather, Stephen Cyril Cara, my Dad, Stephen John Cara (Winnipeg), myself Stephen Harris (Calgary) and my son (Stephen Timothy Dale Cara), Abbotsford, BC. I've got most of the Canadian Family tree from the early 1900's intact...

Hello,

I found your post tonight. I have the CARA family from Cornwall in my family tree and have been working on the Stephen Cara families--found Stephen Cyril Cara on the Rootsweb Obituary Index and Social Security Death Index with his birth and death dates. And, he is also with his mother on the UK incoming passenger list for 3 Jul 1916 arrival in Liverpool on the Scandinavian from Montreal, Quebec. I hadn't realized that Stephen and Margaret Cara (Brantford, Ont) had a 4th child. I would like to confirm the details I have on the family of Stephen Cara and Margaret Milner Reid, if you wouldn't mind sharing with me. Thanks so much. Maurine

This is so interesting. I was always told the Caras were descended from Spanish sailors, but am not sure where my family got that idea, as Cara is also Gaelic (and Italian, not but not Spanish, as far as I know). I've been told maddeningly little about them, though!
My grandmother, Catherine May, was a Cara; she was born around 1901, and had three or four sisters. I know the names of two of them: Rose and Mona. Her father was a dentist from Penzance, but the family had apparently gone up to Liverpool by the time she was born. I'd figured her dad's name was probably Stephen, but now I see that was a pretty safe bet, what with the plethora of Stephens!
Catherine's descendants are now in the north west of England (mostly), British Columbia (my parents emigrated here in the mid-'60s), Holland, and, strangely enough, Melbourne, though we don't bear the Cara surname.

I have done research for the Cara family from Melbourne, Richard who has 3 children, and are descended from the Cornwall branch. If you contact me on starrz@aapt.net.au perhaps we could exchange information.

Hi, I'm Glenn Pearce. Grandson of Catherine May Cara b.1897). I'm living now in Melbourne. I have some of the family tree mapped out in Ancestry.com under Pearce Family Tree which is public. I so have some photos dating back to circa 1900. My tree extends back to Stephen Cara circa 1728.

I'm interested to hear of the Cara's in Melbourne.

We also have the Cara name used as my grandaughter's middle name.
