Enlows joined my family tree in about 1805, when Mary Enlow married John Patterson in Washington Cty, PA. Mary, b. in PA 1787, was daughter of Elliot Enlow (b.1750?) & granddaughter of Abraham Enlow (b. 1725?) "the pioneer." Is this the same Abraham Enlow? Any further info or background? Please email me at CynWright@aol.com.

Jacklyn- e-mail me at ashworth@negia.net and take me as far back with Enlow names as you can and I'll see if I can help. There are a lot of Enlows out there. I also have the versions of the Abe Lincoln stories.

Jim-
Tell us all! This Abe Lincoln thing is so mysterious. I'm from an Enlow line that married up (cousin) with President Grant's family. I've heard (#1) that there was an Enlow woman in the White House and (#2) that Abe Lincoln's father was an Enlow. What are the stories you know?

Kathy- There are two basic versions. One, Nancy Hanks was a servant girl in the Isum Enlow family household. She gets pregnant and Tom Lincoln is given money to take her away and keep it quiet. Thus Abe is an Enlow. The other, which I believe, is that Isum's wife, Mary Brooks, was the only midwife in Hardin County (a fact), the Enlows lived in the same area as the Lincolns (a fact) and when Nancy Hanks was in labor, Tom went looking for Mary. He ran into 16 year old, Abraham Enlow, son of Isum and Mary. He had Abraham go fetch his mother and she made it on time to preside over the birth of Abraham Lincoln. Tom was so happy that Mary was there that he named his son, Abraham, after the boy who made it possible. Now, please tell me about Grant.

My great-grandfather, Francis Whitcomb Enlow b. July 5, 1878 Crawford Co. IN m. Alta Mae Anthony (Antony), and her mother was "Searh Grant." These were Indiana Quaker families, if not that generation, then in previous generations. Old Census records show the Jonathan P. Enlow family in Patoka Twp, Wickliff Post Office in 1860. His son Edmond Enlow was b. Nov. 1844 Crawford Co., IN and this was the father of my ggf Whit. Searh (Sarah) was b. 1859 Grantsburg, Union Township, Crawford County, IN. and her father was Daniel David Grant, probably b. July 8, 1832, probably in Floyd, IN. Daniel David Grant was m. to Hester _______, Probably b. 1858. Daniel David Grant was a farmer, and his parents were probably Sarah F. Potts Grant and Levi Grant. This is the documented part. My grandmother used to show me pictures of President Hiram (U.S.) Grant, and tell me that he was related to us. She also said (and I don't remember which) for me not to tell anyone, because he was (a you-know--- he drank), or not to tell anyone, but he drank. She was a Republican, and adored Lincoln, and had Quaker ways (but was a Nazarene). I don't recall that she ever claimed any kinship to Lincoln, but Abraham Enlow b. 1744 was Jonathan P. Enlow's grandfather. Abraham's son, Jesse Enlow was probably b. 1770 est. Woodford County, Ky and probably m. in Ky about 1795. So I don't know yet how Daniel David Grant was kin to President Grant. Sarah Jane Grant m. George W. Ant(h)ony, b. Oct. 1845 Bern Township, Athens, OH (Didn't President Grant come from here?) and George was the son of Hiram Monroe Antony, b. Feb. 1823, Bern Township, Athens, OH and Jerusha Slater, b. Oct. 1830, Bern Township, Athens, OH. The names and geography all swirl around plausibly, but I have never found the relation between President Grant and David Daniel Grant.

Kathy, you mentioned a Jesse Enlow born about 1770. I have a Jesse Enlow born about 1772-1782 but have him as a son of Issac Enlow Violet Porter. However, everyone else who list Issac Violet as parents do not show a Jesse. So now I wonder if my distant relative who gave me the info was correct. My Jesse married a Sarah Starner
My email is Arkmommahen@aol.com I am only on this during the "free" opportunity.

Cindy,
Do you know who the children of John Patterson and Mary Enlow were? There may be some connection to my family.

Kathy,
Could Jonathan P Enlow of the Wickliff, Indiana area be a sibling of Malissa Enlow born 1814 in Indiana and married 19 Sep 1835 in Crawford Co, IN Hiram Bogard. Would really like to find her parents! They are my great great grand parents.

I show her marriage record just 2 Enlows above Jonathan's, who m. Rachael Hoskins Dec. 16, 1826. Was she b. KY? Jonathan, I think, was b. KY. That's all I have in my filed stuff that might answer the question-- unfortunately no list of Jesse's children.
