My great great grandfather:
Frank Gamba born 1835 Italy.Arrived in the United States at the age of 15 at Baton Rouge, Louisiana, settled in Iberville Parish, Louisiana. At the age of 21, in Iberville Parish became a naturalized citizen on 6-May-1857. At St John Catholic Church in Plaquemine, Iberville Parish he married Carmelite Diaz daughter of Antoine Diaz and Carmelite Hernandez. This document list Frank as the son of Jean Gamba and Adelaine Pardouci. Witnesses at the wedding were A. Sessargo, A. Canesa, Mary Protolongo, and Amchi Mayot. On this document Frank's name is listed as Francis Gamba. On the 1870 cenus he is listed as Frank Gambard living at Bayou Goula, Iberville Parish. In the 1880 cenus he is listed as Francisco Gamba in 3rd Ward, town Plaquemine, Iberville Parish. He is on the 1878 census of Iberville Parish listed as Frank Gamba. On all these census he has his wife and children with him. He worked at the local saw mill and operated a ferry on the Mississippi River in that area. He left his family and traveling to Italy died on the way around 1882. His trunk was returned to Plaquemine but his family did not go pick it up. His parents were born in Italy. In his naturalization papers it states he is a subject of Prince Potentate of Sergenty.I am probably not spelling that correct. I am searching for any contacts in Italy that would have the Gamba and Pardouci surnames in their family. I have seen the Gamba surname spelled different ways.

My great great grandfather was from Italy also. His name was Frank Gamba. He married Carmelitte Diaz and they lived in Plaq., La. As to their children, the only names I know of are Johnny Gamba and Louisa Armantine Gamba. He left for Italy right after Louisa was born in 1882. She was my great grandmother and her daughter Nora Carline was my grandmother. He died when his ship wrecked. Is it possible we are talking about the same person. If so I would be grateful if I could get copies of any papers that you have pertaining to him; I have nothing at all . Thanks, Wilma Collins

My grandmother was Louisa Gamba, daughter of Frank Gamba and Carmelita Diaz. She married James Carline and lived on Bayou Chene and later near the Intracoastal Waterway above Grand River below Plaquemine.

I ran across this posting while searching for information about Frank and what area of Italy he immigrated from (Sardinia). Any information would be most appreciated as I am planning a trip to Italy next year and may visit Sardinia if I have some relevent information. Also, do you have any information about what actually happened on his return trip to Italy. I have heard died, fell over board and ship wrecked! Although there is a posting stating his trunk was returned to Plaquuemine, but never claimed...which would tend to suggest there was not a ship wreck.

I look forward to your reply.

I just happened to find this post while searching for some family history. I think we may be related......Victoria Gamba had a sister named Dora Regina....Dora was my grandmother. My father grew up in Louisiana but raised his family in Arkansas. I now live in North Carolina in Gastonia.
