I had a great aunt Lucille and a grandfather named William. Not sure if this is the same family or not. I grew up in Ohio.

Greetings Diane:

Yesterday I visited a friend whose hobby is genealogy. He asked for my mother's maiden name (Hoferkamp) to do a search in genealogy.com and your email of June 3, 2002 appeared. In it you ask for anyone with information on Henry J. and Mary Elizabeth (Walbaum) Hoferkamp of Louisville, Kentucky. You mention that they had 5 children: Albert H. Hoferkamp, Henry John Hoferkamp, Minnie Hoferkamp, Mamie Hoferkamp, and Caroline J. Hoferkamp. Titkemeyer.

My name is Jim Titkemeyer, but my mother's maiden name is Mary Agnes Hoferkamp. She was born in 1923 in Rising Sun, Indiana, not far from Louisville, Kentucky. Her father was Sam Hoferkamp, and it is possible he was the son of either Albert H. Hoferkamp or Henry John Hoferkamp. I had also heard that the Hoferkamps were originally from Hannover, Germany; however, while stationed in Germany I did some research and discovered that they were from two small villages called Gehrde and Bad Bergen. I made copies of the records (in German) which I still have. They go back hundreds of years.

Please reply to all if you get this. My mother may be able to provide additional information and I will forward your response to her.

Jim,

I just found your message on the Ancestry.com message board. I was not notified when the message was put up there, so that is why I have not responded to you. I have heard of Hoferkamp's in Indiana and Ohio and Illinois, but I have not been able to make a connection with them yet. I know there was a Henry Hoferkamp that lived in Indiana, and died just a few years ago. I have to look into my notes to see if I can find where exactly he lived. I don't think he was too far away from Rising Sun. Are you familiar with Friendship, Indiana? I think he was close to that area too.
I have heard the place name of Gehrde, but I think it may have been in reference to someone who married a Hoferkamp. In records that said Hoferkamp's came from Hanover, they could have meant the Kingdom of Hanover, which is a very large area. If you find out anything from your mother or from research, I would be very interested. Thanks so much for your response!

Diane

William Hoferkamp was my grandfather and Lucille was my great aunt. William had 3 sons Richard, Donald, and David. David passed a few years ago and Donald is my father. We lived in central Ohio, not in Cincinnati. My uncle Richard Hoferkamp is a retired Commander in the Navy and his extended family lives in Virginia Beach.

Jim,
I am looking for a Henry Hoferkamp, born in Germany in 1844 and died 1903 in Jefferson, KY. I believe he moved to Cincinnati where my great grandmother, Elizabeth A. Hoferkamp was born 27 Jan 1868.
Henry was married to Caroline Eppens.
Is there any chance you have information about this family?

I believe the Hoferkamp you are refering to that was born in Germany in 1844 and died in Jefferson Co., KY in 1903 is my great, great grandfather. Yes, he was Henry Hoferkamp. He married my great, great grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Wallbaum, in Louisville on August 14, 1877. They had several children, but I have never heard of him having a child by the name of Elizabeth in 1868 in Cincinnati. I know there were Hoferkamp people in that area, and there was another Henry Hoferkamp in that area as well. My Henry Hoferkamp died December 14, 1903 in Louisville, and is buried on a family plot in Cave Hill Cemetery. His birth year is listed as 1844 on his tombstone. If I can be of any furthur help, just let me know.

We very well may be cousins. Henry Hoferkamp, my great grandfather's dates are 1844-1903. He married (I don't know the date) Caroline Eppens and they had:
Elizabeth A. "Lizzy" Hoferkamp- 1868-1944 (my grandmother)
Amelia Hoferkamp- 1876
Albert Ferdinand- 1878-1934
George William- 1879-1963
Mildred-1890.

Do you have any of these names or others? Could the Mary Elizabeth Walbaum you mentioned be a second wife.?
Thanks for your quick reply

Hello!
Since you listed the other children that your ancestor had, I don't think this could be the same person, because he had children with this marriage during the same time. My Henry Hoferkamp's info is as follows:
Henry J. Hoferkamp (also known as Johann Gerhard Heinrich Hoferkamp in marriage record.)
Born: 1843 in Germany (likely Hanover)
Married: August 14, 1877 in Louisville, KY
To: Mary Elizabeth Wallbaum
Died: December 14, 1903 in Louisville, KY
Buried: Cave Hill Cemetery - Family plot - Louisville, KY
Children:
1.) William H. Hoferkamp - born: July 24, 1878
2.) John George Hoferkamp - born: August 19, 1880
3.) Henry John Hoferkamp - born: May 8, 1882
4.) Albert G. Hoferkamp - born: October 19, 1884
5.) Minnie Elizabeth Hoferkamp - born: October 11, 1887
6.) Caroline J. Hoferkamp - born: January 11, 1895
7.) Mary Elizabeth Mayme Hoferkamp - born: January 11, 1895
As you can see, the last two children were twins. All of the children were born and raised in Louisville, KY. I've never been able to find any siblings of my Henry Hoferkamp. I believe his mother was in Louisville also, and that her name was Mary Anna Hoferkamp. There is a Anna Hoferkamp listed in the city directories that he lived with before he got married, and she is buried in a single, unmarked grave at Cave Hill Cemetery. She is simply listed as Mary Hoferkamp in the cemetery and death records. She died February 7, 1884. In the city directories, she is listed as Anna Hoferkamp. I think her formal name must have been Mary Anna, but maybe she went by Anna. Hope this helps you out. If you have any other ideas, please let me know. Thanks!

I am SO disappointed. I really had hoped this might be the same one. Thanks for your input, though.
