My father, Michael Joseph Igoe, was born in Castlerea, Roscommon, on March 27, 1921. His father, Thomas, was from Glennamaddy, County Galway. I never heard of any Igoes without the e, but spelling was fairly arbitrary back then.

My great grandfathers death certificate indicates that his fathers name was Michael Igo and his mothers name was Margaret Mee. Michael may be the same person you are talking about and Margaret may have died enroute to the USA. Please write back so that we may swap info. thanks joe

My fathers name was also Joseph Michael Igo. His grandfather's name was Patrick Igo,Born around 1837 to Michael Igo and Margaret Mee. He came to the USA and settled in Schuylkill County, Pa. in the 1840's or early 1850. He was naturalized as an American citizen in 1856. He claimed to be a native of County Galway but lived with many of the Igo families in Schuylkill County that claimed to be from County Roscommon. He may have been a nephew of these Igo's or his father Michael was from County Roscommon. I don't know for sure but would appreciate any info you could supply me with. The family was strict Roman Catholics and all of the family names were Michael,John,James,Patrick,Thomas,Mary,Margaret, etc. Thanks Hoping to hear from you.

My father's family, the Igoes, came from Glennamaddy, County Galway. This moderately sized town is only nine miles from my father's actual birthplace, Castelrea, Co. Roscommon -- I was there last year.

Although we may be related, I think it must be some way back, since my father was born in Ireland and has no Igoe relatives in the U.S. and the spelling is different. What little I know of my family tree is below. All of them, I believe were from Glennamaddy, Co. Galway:

Roger Igoe
Thomas Igoe
Thomas Igoe m. Brigid Mannion
Michael Igoe (born Mar. 27, 1921)
Michael Igoe (me)

My father and grandfather have no surviving siblings or nieces or nephews with the Igoe name.

When the Igo families arrived in the USA most of them could not read or wtite in English so most of the names were spelled the way they sounded. Although over the years many of the descendants spell the name IGO while others in the same family spell it Igoe. I visited several of the cemeterys where many of the Igo's are buried and there headstones spell the name Igo but that was the way it was handed down. It could very well be Igo. They were all Roman Catholics and used the names of Michael,Patrick,Thomas,James,John,Joseph,Mary,Margaret, etc. Thanks very much for your reply.
