Dear All:

Please start a separate sub-thread under this
thread ( just do a reply) for each Clan ancestor.

The thread on this board (and the mailing list) is intended for
comments, hints on how to locate, and discussions
on those distant ancestors ( sometimes brick walls) that are
very hard to locate. Anyone with knowledge of the
Clan Ancestors or searching for ancestors and especially
the Clan Genealogist are especially encouraged to post
their finding on the Clan ancestors.

Please do not use this board for merely looking for
recent descendants. That function is better in the
Surname message boards and mailing lists.

Use the standard procedure in the subject header of
inserting your family ancestor information in the following format
NAME > location > dates

Best Wishes and Happy Hunting to All

Hi
I have two different MacKay families in my ancestory, one family came from around Dornoch,Sutherland, the farthest I can go back with this one is 1792, the other MacKay's were from the Edderton, ROC area, early 1800's. Can anyone tell me how does one tell if they are truly from the Clan MacKay?

Robin,

Although clans do have some basis in fact Hollywood and the Scottish tourist board have over egged the pudding. Mackay's as a clan came from sutherland. Our Mackays from Edderton are more probably just poor agricultural labourers.

Robert ( great, great, great great great grandson of george Mackay of Edderton)

Do you have an Andrew McKay that is listed as living in Algoma district with his wife Mary Jane and father William in the 1871 Ontario census? Andrew is listed as age 34 and William age 70 and Mary Jane(Walt) age 28. Mary Jane died 1899 in Bruce county Mi, but buried in Algom. Andrew and a couple of his kids, Curries and Wilsons by marriage, moved to Tenino, Washington USA.
