Hi:

I am trying to find out about an orphanage that was in Natchez, Mississippi in the late 1894-95 that my GM was put into. I would like to know where would records be? If anyone can help me, I will appreciate it.

I recently found my great grandfather and his brother who were at the Protestant Orphans Asylum in Natchez in 1885-1890.

The orphanage is still in Natchez under the name The Natchez Childrens Home. They have a few documents but almost everything was sent to the University of Texas at Austin. You can also go to the Adams County Genweb site and find a few things.

There was also a St. Mary's Girls Orphanage. It was Catholic. Records can be found in Catholic Charities in Jackson, MS. I allegedly had a ancestor there but eventhough she showed up in the 1870 census, there were no records at all available showing her there in 1870.

This is the site with the history of the orphanage that you are seeking. My father was raised in the boys bldg., his sisters in the girls. When they were near to teens, my grandmother reclaimed them one by one.

My father has passed on now, but I do recall his detest for this place, the abuse he suffered, he never recovered from. He heard that the bldgs were to be demolished. He was in his 30's at the time and made a trip to the location to watch the bldgs. fall.

As for rec'ds, the site at top and the census records are about all there is, I would imagine.
