Hello, I am trying to locate some information about my great grandfather, Andres De Herrera. He was listed in the 1870 census for Rio Arriba county, Yunque province. What I am trying to locate is some information about his birth parents. He was adopted or taken by a family by the name of Herrera, with a Francisco Herrera being the head of the family. I am trying to find out if Francisco was his father, or if he was only adopted or taken. We know he was at least half Navajo, but I suspect that he was a Navajo taken in by this Herrera family.

It sounds like its the same family we are talking about Miguel DeHerrera married Nicolasa Fresquez in Chamita NM.
They had 4 children as far as I know they were named Josefita, Severita, Andrellita, and Venseslado they all resided in Rio Arriba County until they passed away. Although most of the family dropped the De from their last name most of us are now known as Herrera.

My grandfather's name is Andres de Herrera. He was born in
Chamita, NM in March of 1869. He was the natural son of Luciano de Herrera and an indian (navaho) maiden named Juana de Herrera. Juana is an Navajo indian who was adopted by Luciano de Herrera and Andrea Garcia. On Andre's birth record it states he is the son of Juana de Herrera and his marriage certificate it states he is Luciano's adoptive son. Family lore says that Luciano was his father and Juana was his mother and the cook in Luciano's household. Andres married Dolores Cordoba in San Juan, NM. He lived in Antonito, Manassa, CO and died and was buried in los Cerritos, near Manassa, CO. They had 3 sons. One of these sons is my father Agustine deHerrera. Does this sound like the Andres you are looking for? If so... please contact me I have much more information and would like to share it with you.
