K Powell,
Thank you so much for your time and interest. The 2nd family you listed at La Cienega as Solomon Olivaz are my grt-grandparents, Solome Olivas and Julia Mendoza. Solome was a ranch hand for Milton Faver's Cienega Ranch in Presidio County for several years. Working off of the1880 census, I have being trying for some time to connect the 1st listed family of Domingo Olivas. I know that Domingo and Solome are related but so far have been unable to find what the relation is. The Pedro Contreras you list in Presidio, I believe is the same as I listed on my message. The others families, I can't connect at this time. Your FHL reference numbers will surely come in handy for future research, again thank you. Do you have access to the 1920 Pecos County census. Gomesindo Olivas may be listed in Ft. Stockton, TX.
Your help is greatly appreciated.

Sorry, no, I only have the 1880 census CDs. I nearly as far out of reach to libraries with good genealogy resources as folks out in the Big Bend counties. Folks Out There have given me so much help, I try to help others in return.

I was really amused at the census enumerator's spellings down in Presidio County back then. He/they must have had only the rudiments of Spanish spelling and did it all "by ear". However, anyone counting on finding someone by standardized spellings wouldn't find much. Copy and Paste rocks! Glad you could use what I found, though it sounds as if you may already have had it?

Another thing I found interesting in that county's census is trying to figure out how the enumerator chose to determine whether to mark someone's race W or I. I'll just betcha that if they spoke Spanish then W, if not, any dialect of Nahuatl accounted for I. Maybe. Folks even today do not usually know that Spanish is "only" Mexico's "official" language (I guess) but that the most common one in that country is Nahuatl.

Looking for information on Heredia family from Presidio area. Especially ancestors of Cleto Heredia, once a local official. Any info would be helpful, I seem to be at a dead end here.

I have some information regarding the Heredia family based on my research of Dionicia Martinez, the wife of Cleto Heredia.
Please allow me time to find my research notes and I will post a message to your attention as soon as I locate them.
Are you related and from which point of Cleto's ancestry are you searching, his parents or grandparents? I seek info on Dionicia's line, any help is appreciated.

I am looking for ancestors (father, grandfather etc) of Cleto Heredia. I also drew a blank on Dionicia Martinez, although there are several with that name, none seem to fit the time period I was searching for. Cleto's daughter Maria de la Paz married Felipe Brito and their daughter Juanita was my childrens great grandmother, Juanita married Miguel Levario and his daughter Frances is my childrens grandmother.

Cahrin,
Please accept this information as unconfirmed data for possible leads in further research. I did not confirm all info probably because of my hitting dead-end on Dionicia Martinez (my lineage)
However, my notes indicate that Cleto's father was Demetrio Heredia, mother was either Lucia Aguilar (Demetrio's first spouse) or Leocadia Chavira (second) I was unable to locate Cleto's birth or baptismal records in order to confirm which. Demetrio marriage to Lucia Aguilar was at Nuestro Padre de Jesus Nazareno in Ojinaga, Chihuahua in 1833. Unknown when he married Leocadia, probably between 1845-1852 based on age of children identified:
Cleto born about 1835, married Dionicia Martinez, unk year;
Lorensa married Manuel Mata 1869;
Romualdo married Maria Paz Lujan 1884;
Maria Ceferina was baptized 1853;
Eustacia b. abt. 1862.
May have been others but church records for Jesus Nazareno on microfilm were difficult to read.
Demetrio's parents were identified as Bacilio Heredia and Andrea Valenzuela married at Jesus Nazareno 1800. Other Children identified:
Cecilia, b.abt. 1804
Dorotea, b.abt. 1806

Entire Heredia family were working/living at Rancho de la Cruz, (See 1880 Presidio County census). Family's surname is misspelled as Herredio. Demetrio and Leocadia family in Census record house #137, and Cleto and Dionicia in house #140. Cleto and Dionicia family shows 7 children living at home. Maria Paz, you already have as married to Felipe Brito, Paula married Santiago Hinojos; Monica married ? Brito.
Policarpo married but widowed early and left with 3 children Jose, Jesus, Policarpo and Demetria.
Leocadia Chavira was born to Norverto Chavira and Silveria Solis in 1809 at Satveo, Chihuahua. Pueblo of many of my lineage.
I hope this helps and leads you to the ancestry information that you are searcing for. Best of luck and best wishes.

Luis
