My maiden name is Clarice Gaddy Cook. I am descended from William Geddie/Gaddie/Gaddy whose parents are said to be Henry Gaddie and Barbara Richard. His grandparents are said to be John Gaddie and Christian Brock. I have been told William had siblings Margaret, John and Christian. I have not been able to find any documentation. Have you? Looking forward to hearing from you.
If you haven't tried this, you can find lots of information on this family at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
What I have found is that Williams' father was Hendri, and it was he who had the siblings Margaret, Christian, James, Cristane and John. I have not yet proven that William, son of Hendri, is the same William who emigrated in the early 1700's though, and landed in Virginia. I don't have a spouse for Hendri yet. I am researching Jemima Gaddie and Peter Mastin, so if you have anything you'd like to share on them, that would be great. I am trying to figure out who Jemima's father was. I don't believe it was Sherwood. I think it was his brother Joseph. they are both sons of William. But noone else agrees.
Thank you for responding. I'll check that. I have Jemima Gaddey m Peter Mastin, d/o Sherwood Gaddey & Mary Bright.
Jemima Gaddy & Peter Mastin applied for a Marriage Bond 9 Nov 1790 Bedford Co, VA. Jemima is a sister of Joseph Gadde (Gaddey) who served as Surety. Source: Bedford Co, VA, Marriage Bonds. Jemima Mastin is mentioned in the will of her father Sherwood Gadde (Gaddey). Bedford Co, VA Will Book 3 1794-1810, Ann Chilton. I've been in contact with direct descendents of Sherwood and Mary and feel their info is pretty straight.
Thanks for the information. The marriage bond transcription that I found reads : Nov. 9, 1790; Peter Mastin & Jemima Gaddey, dt Joseph Gadde; Joseph Gadde, Surety
I interpreted the dt to mean daughter of. I'm not an expert at this ;) But perhaps it was transcribed in error. I did not know that Sherwood's will names Jemima Mastin. I had only heard that it had Jemima. I haven't seen it. So if the will uses Jemima Mastin as her name, then I'm sure that Sherwood would be her father. My husband is also a direct descendant, which is why I am trying to figure this out for him. he descends from Betsy Mastin and William Barnett.
Well, now, guess I will need to order copies of the marriage bond and of Sherwood's will. I did not research those two items . . . someone gave that info to me and I believed it. What is the old saying about trusting no one's research except your own, and with that be cautious?

I have not seen the actual marriage bond, so don't take my word for it either :)...If you do get either of those records, I'd love to know what they actually say! I got that record on the genweb site for Bedford, Virginia. They have the list of marriage bonds, and it was indexed under Mastin.
This morning I wrote to the Bedford County Historical Society asking if they have access to copies of the originals of the Mary Gaddey and Peter Mastin marriage bond . . . plus . . . a copy of the original of Sherwood's will. They have been most helpful in the past. I'll keep you posted. How interesting that you and your husband are distantly related. I always look for a cross over between my maternal line and paternal line. They were all in the same area at the same time but so far haven't found anything.
In your research I wonder if you have a Anna Gaddy born 1740 in Ky and married to Nicholas Mercer in 1777 in Wayne county, Ky. I cannot find her parents and his father is either Moses or Edward (could be both names) his mother is Legraulda Forrester (or Faurrest). Any info much appreciated. Nicholas in Revolutionary war with South Carolina.
Hello, my name is Reed Hancock Gaddie, and I have extensive and a great amount of information on anyone related to Sherwood Gaddie's family. I even have travelled to Scotland and researched his ancestors, and have more information on his direct line descendants.
