I'm searching for any traces of my great great grandfather Ardashes or Arteches Hovsepian. He was born around 1877 and hailed from Trebizond, Armenia. He escaped the genocide with his mother and brothers and fled to Washington D.C. His mother started a restaurant there. I have information from the middle of his life and on, but there are still some missing bits I'd like to clear up. Towards the end of his life, Arteches wrote several articles for an Armenian newspaper in NYC and five volumes entitled "Zartonk", which means "Awakening", concerning his activities during the Soviet takover of Armenia. He wrote under the pseudomyn Malkhas. Arteches died in 1962 in Beruit, Lebanon. ANY information about his publications or his wife, Sonya Samuelian. Thanks!

Hi Sonya,
I grew up in Beirut, Lebanon. When i was in fifth grade I read Malkhas' book Zartonk during my summer vacation and I never stopped reading it after that. There were so many pages which were my favorites. He was a fabulous writer, with a great sense of humor and a very pleasing style. Both young and old could read his works, understand them and enjoy them.
One of our family friends, who now resides in Michigan, was his secretary when he was finishing the last volumes. If you have any questions, I may be able to get the answers for you, or, if it's OK with her, help you get in touch.
You should be very proud of your uncle.
Love,
Hourig

HI,
Sorry about my mix up. I didn't notice, late last night, that Sonya Samuelian was the wife's name.

Hi Hourig,

I want my 15 year old to begin reading Zartonk. We live in Armenia. I hope she can get past her initial difficulty of the language.

Sonya,

I just happened to see this post while I was googling Malkhas. I don't know much about him, but I have a 3rd grade school picture that was taken in 1956 and I am sitting right next to him (Malkhas).
