Kathleen Currer Newell is my great great grandmother who it is said was born in 1859 in Scotland and married 17 years later (1876) in Minnesota (Cole). The only proof of her birth I have is the year written on census sheets. I am ordering her marriage certificate which apparently does not have either of her parent's names listed. The only witness besides the rector's wife is an R. Newell. I have searched for an R. Newell and have found several - but several were dead by 1876 none of them seem to be this R. Newell.

Anyone have any suggestions about where to go now? Is there a common reason why a woman doesn't seem to exist prior to being married? Prior to my search here, there has been some suggestion from family that she was Native. Was this common with native women who married white men? Is there any way to find more information?

It sounds like you want her birth year and parents names. First I would recommend finding all census records for her.
1880- Pipestone Minnesota, with husband Percy, age 30, born England
1885-Pipestone Minnesota
Percy Cole, age 36, born England
Katie Cole, age 26, born Scotland
Raymond Cole, age 4, born Minnesota
Ellen Newell, age 18, born Scotland

So, Ellen may be a sister, another person to trace

This appears to be them in 1900. Raymond's marriage lists his father as O.P. Cole

Do you know when and where Katherine Cole died? Have you looked for a death record or obit?

It is very unlikely that she would have been Native American, given that she was born in Scotland.

Here is one possibility for your Kate in 1875 with her parents. In the 1880 census, the family listed below the Coles on the page is a Norton family, with a wife Rebecca born in Scotland. Living with them is brother, William Newell.

You asked "Is there a common reason why a woman doesn't seem to exist prior to being married?"

In her case, if she was married at age 17, then there would be few records on her becase she was a child.

Even if she were older, more records did apply mainly to men: property, military, voting, naturalization, occupational records such as guilds or apprenticeships, legal cases, etc. etc.

For girls, I can think of: birth, baptism, church membership or confirmation, census, school records (not likely to have survived til now), guardianship records (if one or more parents died), wills/probate (if included in an older relatives records)...

She was probably listed on a passenger list, but I think those early years are scarce and contain little information.

I think your best bet would be later records: obituary, death certificate, church records, newspaper articles, local histories, etc.

Good catch eGENEee on those births. I did see Katherine listed somewhere with a middle name of Currer or Currier. I found the Orlando Percy Cole died in 1939 and is buried in Eastend, Saskatchewan, and Katherine is also buried there, but didn't find a date for her. You can order death certificates from Saskatchewan but the price is rather steep.

It looks like John and Rebecca Norton were in Calgary Alberta in 1906.

If it were me, I would try to find an obit first, if you don't have one.
