Valentine Weeman / Joseph Weeman

Valentine Weeman / Joseph Weeman

I am trying to piece together an ancestry for Joseph Weeman. Joseph was married to Mary Richards April 10, 1774 in Cape Elizabeth, Maine.

It is reported in History of Durham, Maine that Joseph's father's name was Valentine Weeman, and he was from Holland.

I found a small reference to Valentine Weeman as being from Dirkslans, Zuid-Holland, and he had a daughter Christina born there in 1758. This same reference says Joseph was born in 1751, leading me to believe that he was also born there.

I would assume Valentine could be spelled Valentijn.

Does anybody have access to indexes where I can investigate this branch of my ancestry? Thanks.

I think your best bet is to check out "New England Historic Genealogical Society - Founded 1845" at http://www.americanancestors.org

This site has records that go back to the revolutionary war, and it gave a single hit for "Joseph Weeman" between the years of 1770-1870. Unfortunately, you must pay to become a member to view the actual records. Viewing search results is free. The database was called "Standish, ME: Marriages and Marriage Intentions, 1786-1900", however, it appears you already have their marriage info. Perhaps the site has more records for your Weeman family name.

Good luck!

The Weeman family first appears in Cape Elizabeth. I am descended from John Weeman, a brother of Joseph. Joseph served in the army during the revolution enlisting from Cape Elizabeth in 1776.
Valentine's spouse is unknown the 1790 census has his named spelled Voluntine Wuman. In March 14, 1757 Valentine was elected a "hog reeve" with his name spelled "Valentine Beeman" in Cape Elizabeth. A hog reeve is like a sherrif for hogs.
In April 29, 1757 Valentine is listed a a private in Captain Dominicus Jordan's Spurwink Company of militia.
I have more information that I will forward.
