Westmeath is correct. I would go with the spelling Clavin, there are 29 with one being James Clavin of Castletownkindalen, and there is also a Laurence Daly, in Castletownkindalen, Townland Ballynacoska, All in the Union of Mullingar. They would be within 12 miles of the named town in this case Mullingar.
The Poor Law Union boundaries became in most part the
Civil Registration Districts. From the census substitute
Griffith Valuation to which you refer.

Laurence Daly was a tenant of Alice O'Connor Malone and the property was in Chancery (Court) in 1854
property 4A land 4 acres 0 roods 0 perches
4Ba house, outbuillding and land 12.2.30
Griffith Valuation took place 1854. www.askaboutireland.ie

Directories:
Your Patrick would not be Patrick Daly 1894 Rev. c.c. Catholic Church!

1894 James Clavin, farmer Goreagh Cottage, same in 1881, Kilbeggan 4. mi. from Castletown

The Westmeath telephone book shows 3 Clavin's including one in Mullingar. Addresses are sufficient for mail delivery.
The first page of Daly's has 5 listed in Mullingar.

Westmeath does belong to a not for profit History Foundation (fee based) Castletown-Geoghan RC records date back to 1808.

Hello SeanCooper369,

I’m not a descendant, but located information about your Daly and Clavin ancestors. I’m not sure if you have located these records.

For example, I found the baptism indexes for five children of Laurence Daly and Mary Clavin at the Irish Family History Foundation website for County Westmeath, showing these children were baptized in the Castletown Geoghan Catholic Church between 1837 and 1846. The names and years of baptisms for the children are: Maragret (1837); Christian (1838); Margaret (1841); Rose (1843); and Patrick (1846).

Laurence and Mary may have had more than five children, but these are the only ones I could uncover at the IFHF. One of these baptisms is for a Patrick Daly, though his baptism, according to the index, took place in 1846, rather than in 1855. It’s possible this Patrick died as a child, and that Laurence and Mary had another child they named Patrick in 1855, though I didn’t find baptism indexes for any of Laurence and Mary’s children in the 1850s.

The IFHF homepage can be found at: http://www.rootsireland.ie/

Before accessing indexes at any of the IFHF member counties, you’ll need to register with the website. You’ll be able to access indexes that I uncovered for free, but will have to purchase credits to obtain the baptism transcriptions. The transcriptions will be sent to your computer after you purchase the credits. You purchase credits by credit card.

You’ll notice in the first baptism index below for the year 1837, that the child’s first name is spelled Maragret, rather than Margaret. If you do not spell her name in this alternate manner, the IFHF search engine will not produce any results. You’ll also see an index for a second child named Margaret, baptized in 1841. Her name is spelled the correct way. Being that Laurence and Mary named two children Margaret means the first-born child by that name had died young.

The five baptism indexes are below:

You can order the five baptism transcriptions individually, or you can order them from one index. To order them from one source, access the index just as you see it below, without including the first names of the children. In place of the first names, use the wild-card symbol %. Also, do not include the years of birth for the children. For the Parish/District select CASTLETOWN-GEOGHAN (RC) from the drop-down box.

The index will look like this:

If you want all five baptism transcriptions sent to your computer, you’ll have to purchase enough credits in bulk. More information about purchasing credits can be found at the IFHF website.

Next I found the 1870 marriage index for Patrick Daly and Margaret Bannon, and also located the baptism indexes for nine of their children. The marriage and the baptisms all took place in the Castletown Geoghan Catholic Church in Westmeath. The names of the children and their years of baptism are: Mary (1871); Margaret (1873); Bridget (1874); Patrick (1876); Joseph (1877); Christina (1879); Christopher (1881); Laurence (1883); and Margaret (1888).

You’ll notice there are baptisms for two children named Patrick and two children named Margaret. This indicates the first-born Patrick and Margaret had died young.

In the baptism indexes that follow, you’ll see that the first name of Joseph’s mother is listed as Mary. The IFHF search engine did not accept Margaret as her first name. This may have been an error on the part of the parish priest who recorded the baptism, or an error in transcription. The other option is Margaret’s middle name may have been Mary, which was recorded as Mary rather than Margaret in the baptism index for Joseph.

The marriage and baptism indexes follow:

To purchase all nine baptism transcriptions from one index, access the index as you see it below, with the % as a wild card for the first names of the children. Also, do not include Margaret as the first name of the children’s mother, because in the baptism for Joseph, her first name is listed as Mary.

In addition leave out the years of baptisms for the children.

Next I found what I believe may be your Daly family in the 1901 census of Ireland, living in an address of Ballinacoska, Castletown, Westmeath.

The census shows that 56 year old Patrick was a farmer born in Westmeath, who was married and who could read and write. He was also a Roman Catholic, as were all members of his family.

At his age of 56 in 1911, Patrick’s birth year would be circa 1845.

Patrick’s wife is 54 year old Margaret Daly, born in Westmeath. She too could read and write.

The children in the household are 16 year old Kate, 17 year old Laurence, and 11 year old Margaret.

The census was found at the National Archives of Ireland website link at:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

You can view a copy of the original 1901 census of Ireland for the Daly family at the following National Archives link: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai001260020/

I also found Patrick and Margaret Daly, and their daughter Margaret in the 1911 census of Ireland, still living in Ballynacoska, Castletown, Westmeath. In this census Patrick’s age is listed as 69, while his wife Margaret is 66. Their daughter Margaret is 22.

At the end of the census line for 66 year old Margaret Daly, you’ll see the numbers 40 11 and 6. The 40 stands for the number years Margaret and Patrick had been married as of 2 April 1911 when the census was enumerated. The 11 stands for the number of children they had, while the 6 represents the number of their children still living as of the 1911 census.

As you saw earlier, I only found the baptisms of nine of Patrick and Margaret Daly’s children.

The census, from the National Archives, follows:

AMERICAN RECORDS

Next I found several records that I believe pertain to your Daly and related ancestors in the United States. You may already have these.

In your message to Ancestry.com you had stated that Patrick Daly’s daughter, Catherine May Daly, had first married a Jeremiah Joseph Sullivan.

I found what I believe to be Catherine’s and Jeremiah’s marriage index as well as a copy of their original marriage license at the Latter Day Saints (LDS) website at https://www.familysearch.org/#form=advanced-records

The index below shows that a Jeremiah J. Sullivan and a Katherine Daly were married in Chicago, Illinois on 25 June 1908. At the time of marriage Jeremiah was 23 years old, while Katherine was 21:

Next I found an LDS birth index and a copy of the original report of a birth for Jeremiah and Catherine Mary Daly Sullivan’s son, “Jerimiah” Patrick Sullivan, who was born in Chicago on 9 June 1909. His 26 year old father’s birthplace is listed as Bantry, County Cork, while his 24 year old mother’s birthplace is listed as Castletown, Westmeath.

The index is below:

I then found what I believe to be the older Jeremiah Sullivan’s death index and death certificate at the LDS website. The index shows that a Jeremiah L. Sullivan had died in Chicago on 4 February 1909, at the age of 25 years old. His occupation was locomotive fireman. The index also shows that at the time of his death he was living at 6601 Drexel Avenue. He was buried in the Mt. Olive Cemetery on 7 February 1909.

The index below gives his middle initial as L., but if you access a copy of the original death record, and enlarge it, you can see that his middle initial is actually a J.
