Unfortunately, the information that I have regarding the children of Alexander Maxwell does not agree with the information presented in your post. The well documented line that I have is:

Alexander Maxwell (b. Jan. 19, 1804, County Down, Ireland, d. Sept. 5, 1883), who was my gggrandfather, immigrated to the US in about 1810 presumably arriving at the port of Baltimore where he married, fathererd 11 children, farmed, and owned and operated a Shoe Findings store at 9 Ensor St. in Baltimore. He lived near Baltimore until about 1855. At that time he moved his family to Frederick Co., MD. His parents are not known at this time. He married:

(1) Elizabeth Hopkins (about 1810 - Oct. 30, 1873), cousin of Johns Hopkins founder of the university and dau. of Evan Thomas Hopkins and Elizabeth Hopkins Hopkins on May 14, 1829 in Baltimore, MD

(2) Margaret Ridgeway Beall on April 13, 1875 in Frederick Co.

According to the family bible apparently written in the hand of Alexander and his son-in-law James Frances Beall, the children of Alexander and Elizabeth were:

1. William Evan (Jan. 16, 1831 - 1906) m. Susan Slayman of Loudon Co., VA in 1866; 7 children
2. Mary Jane (Mar. 4, 1833 - May 8, 1871) m. James Frances Beall of Frederick Co., MD in 1860; 6 children
3. Margaret (April 19, 1835 - Sept. 2, 1845)
4. John Thomas (Oct. 9, 1837 - Oct. 12, 1918), my ggrandfather, m. Laura Virginia Gibson of Loudon Co., VA on May 14, 1672. She was a daughter of Nelson Gibson and Emsey Hatcher; 9 children
5. Joseph (Mar. 5, 1840 - Aug. 30, 1853)
6. Samuel (Aug. 4, 1842 - Oct. 25, 1845)
7. James Stevenson (Sept. 20, 1844 - Aug. 3, 1892) m. Sara Frances Beall, Jan. 2, 1877; 4 children
8. Elizabeth (Aug. 16, 1846 - Feb. 10, 1882) m. James Frances Beall of Frederick Co. MD in 1876 after the death of her sister Mary Jane; 3 sons
9. Wesley Alexander (Nov. 10, 1848 - April 16, 1920) m. Mary Esther Doub Baker, June 14, 1881; 4 children
10. Emma Virginia (Jan. 11, 1851 - Jan 1, 1946) m. Lemuel Thomas Beall in 1914 at the age of 63
11. Francis Albert (Oct. 17. 1854 - July 24, 1862)

Children of Rev. John Thomas and Laura Virginia Maxwell were:

1. Frances May (Aug. 28, 1873 - May 24, 1959) never married
2. Emsey Myrtle (April 1, 1875 - July 25, 1875)
3. Laura Virginia (April 11, 1877 - Jan. 25, 1956) m. Christian Streit White II, Aug. 28, 1906; 4 children
4. Alvernon Gibson (1879 - 1968) never married
5. Willie Nelson (July 19, 1881 - Nov. 14, 1957) m. Jesse Richards of Marshall, VA, May 18, 1935
6. Emma Pearl (May 30, 1883 - April 2, 1976), my grandmother, m. John Lewis Goodloe, Staunton, VA; 6 sons
7. Cornelia Lanier (about 1885 - Nov. 27, 1966) never married
8. John Noble (Oct. 8, 1887 - March 26, 1932) m. Octavia Goode of Chesterfield Co., VA, Sept. 5, 1923
9. Gladys Lois (1889 - 1972) m. Howard Morgan McManaway, Aug. 8, 1918; 4 children

That this John Maxwell is the son of Alexander is well documented in the records of Frederick Co. At the time of his second marriage, Alexander deeded all of his real estate and personal property to his son John T. Maxwell except for his "mansion house" which he deeded to daughters Elizabeth and Emma. All property was to be sold at the time of his death and the proceeds to be divided among his children.

Alexander Maxwell did, in fact, have a brother named John who also lived in Baltimore. Perhaps this John was the progenitor of your line.

Happy hunting!

Cathy

Saw your post. Wondered if you knew the parents of Nelson Gibson who married Emsey Hatcher.

Sorry but no, I don't know who the parents of Nelson Gibson were. And I can't seem to find any info on them in my Grandmother's records which are fairly complete. Maybe she never knew who they were.

What is your connection to the Gibson/Maxwell family?

Gladys Lois Maxwell was my Grandmother. The Gibsons originally were part of the Society of Friends (Quakers) who came to Loudoun County, Virginia from Pennsylvania in the mid-1700's, but the information I gathered is very incomplete since it skipped at least one generation.
