Carol, I know I have been in touch with you since this message with James' parents and grandparents...but for those who may see this and are interested in the same info...James Robert Carroll b. 1863 Orange Co., IN was the son of John S. Carroll and Elizabeth Barr. John was the first born son of Benjamin W. Carroll, Sr. and Sarah "Sally" Sinclair (sometimes spelled St. Clair). Benjamin is first found in the Orange Co Records with his marriage to Sarah in 1832. He is listed in the 1830 - 1870 Orange Co census records. He is where I have hit my "brick wall"! He is most often listed as b. in KY in the census records, but atleast once NC is mentioned. We cannot find him and Sarah listed in an 1880 census, even though they were still alive and supposedly still living in Orange Co. This was the first census that the parents b. place was listed...which I had hoped would shed some light on where to further search for them. Benjamin is listed as born July 28, 1811 in KY or NC, and died March 4, 1891. Sarah Jane Sinclair was born June 6, 1813 in KY. Her parents are George Sinclair b. abt. 1784 in VA and Rachel Sharp, b. March 5, 1790 in KY. (I have more info on them) Benjamin and Sarah's children are:

John S. Carroll b. January 09, 1832 m. Elizabeth Barr
Nancy Carroll b. June 24, 1833 m. James Clements
George Carroll b. October 04, 1839 never married
Elizabeth Carroll b. 1843 m. David Gilpatrick
James W. Carroll b. 1845 m. Margaret Stockinger
Benjamin W. Carroll, Jr. b. December 12, 1847 m. (1)Susannah Stockinger (2)Eliza A. Elkins (3) Mahala E. Davis
Isaac Carroll b. March 12, 1850 m. (1)Rebecca J. Hall (2)Rosa Jane Andry
Abigail Carroll b. November 23, 1853 m. Harrison Furgeson
Hickman Carroll b. October 15, 1854 m. (1)Sarah E. King (my line)(2)Amanda Eva King
Sarah Jane Carroll b. December 05, 1856 m. Jacob Painter
Joseph W. Carroll b. Abt. 1860 m. Sarah E. Davis
Emaline Carroll b. aft. 1860 d. bef. 1891

John S. Carroll and Elizabeth Barr's children were:
Nancy Ann Carroll b. Nov. 18, 1858 m. (1) George Thomas Byers (2) John W. Byers
James Robert Carroll b. April 1863 m. Mary Elizabeth Mathers
George Carroll b. abt. 1862 d. bef. 1891
Letticia Jane Carroll b. abt. 1864 m. Philip Kimble
These marriages are listed in Orange Co records.

If anyone is a descendant of Benjamin Carroll and/or knows any further info on Benjamin's ancestry, please contact me at We have a wonderful website for sharing info - both past and present. Thanks! Esther Burton

Helo Mrs. Burton.
I have a Nancy Ann Carroll in my line, she was my grandmother's grandmother. From a family letter I have which was written by a granddaughter of hers she says that Nancy Ann Carroll was born June 17, 1790 in Fairfax, Virginia. When she was about 21 she married (eloped) with James Clemmons and lived in Virginia until 1815. Then, with their two small children, the went to Hopkinsville, Kentucky where they had seven more children (9) in all. At some time in the early 1830's these young people heard of Texas, of Stephen F. Austin and his famous grants of land. The went by wagon to what is now known as Washington County, Texas. She died in Brenham at the home of her grandaughter on November 26, 1862, age 72 years. Written by Mrs.W.H. Cherry at Giddings, Texas. I have been looking for her parents? Any info will be appreciated. Thank you. Jim Perry

Do you have a James Madison Carroll born in Kentucky about 1829? His father (name unknown) was born in Virginia and his mother (name unknown) was born in Kentucky.
